Congratulations to Professor Mitch Resnick on receiving the 2025 SIGCSE?Award for Outstanding Contribution to Computer Science Education!
Here are the remarks I made today when I received the 2025 SIGCSE Award for Outstanding Contribution to Computer Science Education... ----------------- I’m so honored to be receiving this award. But I really feel that the award shouldn’t be going just to me, since all of my projects over the years have been collaborations. Everything I’ve worked on, from LEGO Mindstorms to Computer Clubhouses to Scratch to our latest work on OctoStudio, all have been collaborations. Most notably, none of these projects would have been possible without the extraordinary contributions by students and staff in our Lifelong Kindergarten research group at the MIT Media Lab. Over the past 30 years, I’ve worked closely with more than 100 students and staff in the Lifelong Kindergarten group, some of them here today. I want to give special thanks to Natalie Rusk, my long-time collaborator, who has played a major role in all of our group’s projects. As a group, I think we’ve been successful since we’ve always kept our focus on providing young people with opportunities to develop as creative, curious, caring, and collaborative learners. And we’ve succeeded in doing that because all of the students and staff in the group have, themselves, been creative, curious, caring, and collaborative learners. So I’m honored to share this award with all of them.

Media Lab researchers Tobin South and Shayne Longpre are among the more than 100 independent experts—including Nobel laureates and Turing Award winners—who contributed to the International AI Safety Report. The first comprehensive global assessment of AI risks, the report is supported by 30 nations, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD - OCDE), United Nations, and European Union. It aims to inform policymakers and enhance international cooperation on AI safety. https://lnkd.in/gZuHfukJ

For the first time in 50 years, active payloads developed at MIT will land on the surface of the moon, as part of the IM-2 lunar mission. With a launch scheduled today, weather permitting, #IM2 will carry three payloads created by Media Lab researchers and collaborators, including researchers from MIT AeroAstro and MIT.nano—a 3D camera; a tiny AstroAnt rover developed in collaboration with Media Lab member company Castrol; and Humanity United with MIT Art and Nanotechnology in Space (HUMANS), a nano-etched disc encoded with the voices of people all around the world, sharing their thoughts on the meaning of space for themselves and humanity. Watch the livestream of the launch and learn more about all of the payloads: tothemoontostay.org

At 7pm ET on Feb. 28, Professor Danielle Wood, director of the Media Lab's Space Enabled research group, and collaborators will present "Harriet Jacobs: Journey to Saturn." Part of MIT's Artfinity celebration, this choreopoem explores our view of Earth from space. The multimedia performance combines spoken word, music, and dance to examine concepts of space through the writings of 19th-century African American poets and abolitionists, revealing a perspective of home visible only through satellite imagery. https://lnkd.in/gw3jaQcb

The integration of AI and large language models (LLMs) into educational research is revolutionizing the way we approach teaching and learning. The MIT Jameel World Education Lab supports MIT researchers that are driving innovation in education through collaborative approaches to research, teaching, and engagement via our Education Innovation grants. In the spotlight today are four innovative projects at the forefront of this transformation, each leveraging AI and LLMs to address unique educational challenges and improve learner outcomes.
