"My hope is that this is a first step towards a powerful platform that enables people studying proteins to do their research," says MIT Department of Biology Professor Richard Young, also of the Whitehead Institute, "and that it helps us understand how humans develop into the complex organisms that they are, how mutations disrupt those natural processes, and how to generate therapeutic hypotheses and design drugs to treat dysfunction in a cell."

We are a rigorous, creative, and dynamic community that encourages scientists to tackle important research problems.
关于我们
The MIT Department of Biology is home to approximately 180 undergraduates, 200 graduate students, 200 postdoctoral researchers, and more than 60 world-renowned faculty. Our research focuses on 10 major research areas: biochemistry, biophysics, and structural biology; cancer biology; cell biology; computational biology; genetics; human disease; immunology; microbiology; neurobiology; and stem cell and developmental biology. We promote a highly collaborative environment that allows for a free exchange of ideas across research areas and academic disciplines. The result is a rigorous, creative, dynamic culture in which scientists and students tackle important problems and questions in biology and related fields. Our location — at the heart of one of the world’s most crucial biotech/pharma hubs in Kendall Square — creates exciting opportunities for research, employment, and the commercialization of new discoveries.

A gift to MIT Biology during the MIT 24-Hour Challenge will help unlock a $100,000 gift from MIT Biology alumna Dyann Wirth, PhD '78. Image: Research in the Lew lab studies questions in fundamental cell biology, using fungal models like Saccharomyces cerevisiae?and a mix of experimental and computational approaches. The group also studies an emerging non-model fungus,?Aureobasidium pullulans, which is a ubiquitous poly-extremophile with unconventional growth modes that raise novel questions in cell biology. Please support this and other fundamental research by donating to MIT Biology: https://lnkd.in/ehVD9wkV

Congratulations to the 2025 Koch Institute Image Award Winners! Among the breathtaking images unveiled yesterday in the Koch Institute Gallery in Cambridge is this one from the Department of Biology at MIT and the Whitehead Institute. Eugene Bell Career Development Professor of Tissue Engineering and Core Member of the Whitehead Institute Pulin Li and her lab are interested in how cellular diversity and patterning arise in developing organs. For example, this image depicting endothelial cells, which form the lining of the blood vessels, adopt different functions and patterns depending on the organ they vascularize.
