The Proyecto ASPIRE, now in its third year, has sponsored some terrific undergraduate research - both at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and at Universidad del Valle de Guatemala - that is focused on advancing local innovation by and for Guatemalan communities! The International Development Design Summit is back! This time on the East Coast of New Zealand from October 29 – November 9, 2024. Applications to participate are due September 2! Pleased to see Eric Verploegen's CoolVeg Foundation funded to pursue work on the amazing Forced Air Evaporative Cooling Chamber he originally developed while at D-Lab! This project will develop and deploy a system that combines the rapid cooling of forced-air cooling with the low cost and energy efficiency of evaporative cooling. The modular system can be affordably deployed near the farm gate, used in transportation, and increase produce shelf-life for vendors. Pilot chambers will be designed and deployed in Nigeria and India. Congratulations to Eric and all those awarded funding in this program!

Check out the first video from D-Lab community partner Twende Innovates Tanzania Social Innovation Center for the Design for Second Life Innovations project - a window into a Creative Capacity Building workshop! The 23-month initiative seeks to create second life options for Samsung devices, with a particular focus on the agriculture, energy, education, and health sectors. In a unique co-design experience, MIT students are joining forces with communities in Uganda, Tanzania and South Sudan, leveraging MIT D-Lab's Creative Capacity Building (CCB) methodology. International Development Design Summits (IDDS) are intense, hands-on, community-based design trainings that bring together a diverse group of people to teach them the co-creative design process and how to prototype low-cost technological solutions to improve livelihoods of people.
