Professor Oliver Jagoutz, a fellow Austrian with a passion for the mountains and a love for exploration is an ETH Zürich graduate and a distinguished researcher and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His groundbreaking work on the Earth’s composition and CO? sequestration exemplifies how science can address global challenges with innovative solutions. “The construction sector is one of the most fragmented ever,” says Catherine De Wolf SM ’14, PhD ’17, assistant professor of circular engineering for architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. “To really solve the problem of fragmentation in the industry, we must make the cataloging, reuse, and assembly of materials faster and easier than the wrecking ball.” Here’s how De Wolf is using AI and other tech innovations to match new construction needs with structures being demolished: https://bit.ly/4fUvfXD

What a wonderful week in Singapore! It’s been a week full of meaningful connections, insightful events, and inspiring conversations. ? MIT Presidential Welcome Tour: Had the honor of attending the MIT Alumni Association Presidential Welcome Tour, representing the MIT Club of Shanghai. It was great to reconnect with old friends, meet new faces, and engage with alumni volunteers and communities across Asia. The energy and impact of MIT alumni worldwide never fail to inspire! ? HYUNDAI CRADLE Day 2024: Participated in this fantastic factory at the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS) for “Factory of the Future: AI for Manufacturing.” It was a privilege to represent DeepVerse and share insights on AI for autonomous material discovery and optimization while connecting with corporate, investment, and government sectors. ? National University of Singapore Innovation Festive Suzhou Event: Proud to highlight DeepVerse, which is also a NUS Overseas Colleges partner company, as we continue to drive innovation and collaboration in advanced materials. Grateful for the opportunity to engage with such a dynamic ecosystem in Singapore. Excited about the synergies and future collaborations ahead! #MITAlumni #AI #Innovation #DeepVerse #HyundaiCRADLE #NUS

I'm still buzzing from the #MITPresidentialWelcomeTour in Singapore! President Kornbluth's insights resonated deeply with me, particularly on #InternationalCollaboration, #entrepreneurial spirit, and #climate initiatives. MIT's commitment to tackling global challenges like climate change through collective action, innovative solutions, and interdisciplinary collaboration is truly inspiring. The emphasis on fostering a holistic approach to graduate education, beyond academic training, also struck a chord. It was amazing to meet so many friends Toronata Tambun, @henry tan Tan Puay Siang, Marc Rakotomalala, Owi Ruivivar, Shiva V. , new friends Louis Lim and many more... Huge thanks to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, President Kornbluth, Natalie Lorenz Anderson, Whitney Espich, Kevin Wesley, Nureen Das, Robert Wickham and the MIT Alumni Association team for the privilege and for an unforgettable evening. Great job MIT Club of Singapore and my awesome exco Hau Yee Ng, Sheinal Bhuralal, Zhang Yao,Winston Lim, Dexter Tan Shuijian, Edward O, Loh Ching Soo, Neralakere Somashekhar (Soma), Deep Singhania let's keep carrying high the MIT flag in our beautiful region and making the world a better place #MITSingapore #MITAlumni #Education #Innovation #ImprovingTheWorld

Neurosurgeon Emanuela Binello ’95, SM ’96, PhD ’99, ScD ’04 takes a story-centered approach to treating patients with brain and spine injuries. For her, learning someone’s medical history and personal story is essential. “It informs the treatment choices,” she says. “And it can help you tease out the nuances of what’s important to that patient.” https://bit.ly/3YDNRW5

As MIT students, Larry Kahn ’75, SM ’76; David Lockwood ’75; and Rick Tucker ’80 joined the then-thriving tiddlywinks club. They remain deeply connected to the game and its players today. “This winks community over the last 54 years has been one of the greatest experiences of my life,” says Lockwood, noting that he meets his friends at tiddlywinks events several times a year. “These are the friends we’ve kept.” https://bit.ly/4ehkOfG

One of the most fulfilling experiences I’ve had recently is serving as an ?????? ?????????????????????? ??????????????????. In this role, I have the privilege of meeting truly remarkable young minds, each with their own unique journey and unwavering dedication to their passions. Every interview brings fresh inspiration. Just last week, I met students who have spent over 4,000 hours mastering complex chemistry concepts, developed apps to address real-world issues, and delved deeply into fields like quantum computing and machine learning—all before even setting foot on a university campus! ?? These students demonstrate not just incredible intellect but also profound commitment and resilience. Their stories often leave me in awe. ?? What’s both humbling and bittersweet is that only ?????????? 4% of these exceptionally talented applicants will ultimately join the Massachusetts Institute of Technology community. It’s a dauntingly competitive process, and knowing this makes me all the more grateful for the opportunity to connect with each of them. They’ve shared with me their dreams, challenges, and unique perspectives, which is a true honor. To all the young talents I’ve met and those yet to come—thank you for letting me be part of your journey. Your passion, curiosity, and drive are the very qualities that will shape our future. I am incredibly lucky to do this work and continually inspired by your stories. ?? Special thanks to the MIT Alumni Association #MIT #Education #FutureLeaders #Gratitude #Inspiration #talent #iwishiwassosmart #MITAlumi

After 24 years in the US Coast Guard, Eugene McGuinness SM ’19 decided to move into the private sector. Before he made the shift, he participated in the MIT Alumni Career Design Fellowship. “It was fantastic because it was a forcing function to really critically think about what does Gene really like to do and not do,” he says. In 2023, he retired from the Coast Guard as a captain and pursued the next phase in his career. Now, he works as the head of flight test at Zipline, an autonomous drone delivery service. https://bit.ly/40EHseR

Attending the MIT Asia Volunteer Networking Reception was a memorable and heartwarming experience. This event, hosted by Natalie Lorenz Anderson, President of the 150-year-old MIT Alumni Association, and her classmate from class of 1984, Ms. Hau Yee Ng the president of MIT Club of Singapore showcased the true spirit of the MIT community. I was honored to receive a warm welcome from the MIT Club of Singapore members, including Dexter Tan Shuijian whom I had previously met in a small meeting setting, as well as Grégoire THOMAS, the club’s VP and associate alumnus and Loh Ching Soo. One of the standout impressions was the inclusivity and open-heartedness of the community. At MIT, alumni status is supposed to be embraced equally, whether one is a degree alumnus or an associate alumnus. Contributions are valued not only by financial measures but mainly by the time and dedication members bring to support the collective. This is unlike a similar club in another country, where bylaws are designed to highlight and reinforce status differences, which may be against the MIT Alumni Association’s spirit that fosters unity, focusing on shared efforts to contribute meaningfully to the world. This inclusive approach made me feel valued and loved - hence healthier. I hope to apply this inclusivity in my organization. Kudos to the MAA team (Aya Kappel, Kevin Wesley, Nureen Das et al) for organizing this event. Their attention to cultural details, choice of venue, and even the photographer they hired Ricky Gui reflect what world-class execution looks like.
