Remember that although the temperatures are starting to drop in Mississippi, fire ants are still active in your customer's yards. If you have applied granular bait the recommended 3x already this season and still see a mound during a service, make sure to perform a mound treatment. Although the majority of termites in Mississippi swarm in Spring/early Summer, PMPs occasionally encounter alates in October and November. The most common species swarming this time of year is the light southern subterranean termite (Reticulitermes hageni). This species tends to swarm in the Fall, is generally *smaller than Eastern subs, and is *brown (but can sometimes appear black). Manage these the same way you would for other native subterranean termites. For more information on #termites in #Mississippi, visit the MSU Extension Termite Webpage: https://lnkd.in/en_hJkBr *Termites don't read books and don't know what they are "supposed" to look like all of the time. Don't ID termites on color and/or size alone! #MSUext #Entomology #PestManagement

Remind your customers that although the weather can feel nice this time of year and they might want to leave their doors open, there are plenty of overwintering pests such as the brown marmorated stinkbug, that would love the chance to come indoors. Find out more about this overwintering pest here: https://lnkd.in/gGEEqrY6 #IPM #Entomology #PestManagement #MSUext

Have you ever been treating for German roaches and seen a white #roach? No, it is not a new species. When a #cockroach (or other insect) molts, it is often light-colored and soft (known as "teneral"). Over time, the color will darken, the wings will inflate (if applicable), and the cuticle will harden. #IPM #PestManagement #Entomology #MSUext For more information on cockroaches, see this Mississippi State University Extension Service Publication: https://lnkd.in/gueUNMC4

Household casebearers (formerly known as plaster bagworms) are a unique insect that Mississippi PMPs may encounter. These caterpillars construct cases similar in appearance to their casemaking clothes moth cousins; however, household casebearers are not typically considered pests. Their pumpkin seed-shaped cases can often be found in sheds, garages, and crawlspaces in more humid parts of southern states, where they feed primarily on spiderwebs and dead insects. They have been encountered indoors in bathrooms, where they are likely feeding on hair and dandruff. There are rare reports of these insects eating fabric.
