MLMA Executive Director, Ellery Jones, serves on the advisory board for the Mississippi State University College of Forest Resources Department of Sustainable Bioproducts.?Each year, the board, comprised of industry stakeholders, gathers to offer their industry insight to the department. The department also provides an overview of progress in academics, outreach, research, and extension initiatives they have achieved throughout the year. While attending the Wood Magic Science Fair hosted by the Department of Sustainable Bioproducts at Mississippi State University, Ellery & Lauren were able to stop by the Sawmill Station! Here, students were able to see a portable sawmill cut eastern red cedar logs (used for their great scent!) into lumber. This portable sawmill demonstrated on a small scale to students what our member mills do on a daily basis! Students learned about heartwood and sapwood and were given blocks of the cut-up lumber. They also learned how residuals are used so that when cut, nothing is wasted! ?? RTA Executive Director Dr. Nate Irby recently presided over the Mississippi State University Department of Sustainable Bioproducts Annual Advisory Board Meeting, where, as longtime chair, he led discussions on the department’s progress in academics, outreach, and extension initiatives over the past year. ?? Nathan Irby, Ph.D. also met with Dr. C. Elizabeth Stokes, associate professor in the Department of Sustainable Bioproducts, to discuss ongoing wood crosstie research needs. ?? Executives from allied associations joined the day's meetings as well. This month, MLMA Executive Director, Ellery Jones, had the opportunity to tour the Hinds Community College Logging Simulator class, which is a part of the Logging Equipment Operator Academy. The academy is an 8 to 16-week program designed to equip students to become a logging equipment operator with safety certifications as well as Professional Logging Manager (PLM) status. Ellery was accompanied by representatives from Hinds Community College, the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce Government Affairs Committee, Mississippi State University Extension Service,?and the Mississippi Loggers Association, Inc. This team is working together to strategize recruitment efforts for the academy.
