Thyssenkrupp aims to cut 11,000 jobs in its steel division, which is 40 percent of the current total of 27,000 jobs. Germany’s largest steel company announced this on Monday, leaving steelworkers on the Rhine and Ruhr, in Siegerland and Sauerland shocked. Meanwhile, the IG Metall union has made it clear that it will support these strikes – assuming, as with the past decades of cutbacks, factory closures and forced redundancies. Steel workers demonstrate in Duisburg on June 9, 2022 in front of the Thyssenkrupp Steel headquarters On Monday, the management of the company’s steel division presented the long-announced “comprehensive industrial future concept” to the strategy committee of the board. It is an austerity plan designed to secure profits in the escalating global trade and economic war at the expense of the workforce. By 2030, 5,000 jobs must be cut in steel mills and factories everywhere, and that also includes “a significant streamlining of administrative functions.” The processing plant in Kreuztal-Eichen in the Siegerland region, which employs almost 600 people, is to be closed. The largest steel plant in Germany, in the northern part of Duisburg, is also likely to be particularly affected. Almost 13,000 people currently work there. A further 6,000 jobs are to be eliminated through outsourcing to external service providers or through sales. This particularly affects the 3,000 steel workers at Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann (HKM) in the southern part of Duisburg. Thyssenkrupp is the largest shareholder there with 50 percent, Salzgitter Stahl owns 30 percent, the French group Vallourec 20 percent. If current purchase negotiations with Hamburg-based financial investor CE Capital Partners (CEC) fail, “Thyssenkrupp Steel will hold talks with the other shareholders on mutually agreed closure scenarios,” the group explained. The remaining 16,000 employees face pay cuts of 10 percent to bring staffing costs “to a competitive level,” according to the company. This must be achieved, among other things, by cutting special payments and bonuses. Newly hired employees must have a lower salary. On the day the cuts were announced, Oliver Burkhard, the parent company’s chief human resources officer, announced that he would resign from that job on January 31, 2025. Burkhard, who was the North Rhine-Westphalia district manager of IG Metall before joining the group’s executive board, wants to devote himself to his second job as managing director of the shipyard division Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). The arms manufacturer, which produces submarines and warships and employs 6,500 people, is almost drowning in orders due to escalating wars. Currently working hard to go public, Burkhard says he wants to concentrate fully on this task. It is not yet known who will succeed him as HR manager at ThyssenKrupp. Within IG Metall, knives are already being sharpened. Tekin Nasikkol, the chairman of the General Works Council,

The lab will be led by Dr. Abeba Birhane, named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the AI space. An Artificial Intelligence (AI) Accountability Laboratory (AIAL) is being launched this evening (November 28) in Trinity College Dublin (TCD). Supported by a grant of almost €1.5m from the AI Collaboration – an initiative of the Omidyar Group, Luminate and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, AIAL will explore the wider impact of technology, with the aim of “powerful entities”. held accountable. on harm done, outline a “justice-driven” AI model evaluation, as well as an audit of models already in use – particularly those used on vulnerable groups. Located in the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College, the AIAL will be led by Dr Abeba Birhane, a research fellow at the ADAPT Research Ireland Center and one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in AI. The group’s research aims to address structural inequalities in AI deployment, examine power dynamics within AI policymaking, and advance justice-driven audit standards for AI accountability. According to the Laboratory – which cited examples of structural issues caused by AI – the UK’s National Health Service’s liver allocation algorithm for transplant patients was found to be age discriminating and a decision support algorithm used by Danish child protection services was used to help protect children. without a formal evaluation and was found to suffer from numerous issues, including information leakage, inconsistent risk scores, and discrimination based on age. Discussing issues surrounding the current limits and dangers of generative AI at SiliconRepublic.com’s Future Human podcast last year, Dr Birhane said that media reporting on generative AI tends to be “extremely over-hyped” when he comes to his abilities. However, she said that “we hear very little about her problems” “The AI Accountability Lab aims to foster transparency and accountability in the development and use of AI systems,” said Dr Birhane. “And we have a broad and inclusive view of AI accountability. This includes a better understanding and critical scrutiny of the wider AI ecology – for example through systematic studies of potential corporate capture, to the evaluation of specific AI models, tools and training datasets.” The Lab’s initial goals include leveraging empirical evidence to inform evidence-based policies, challenging and dismantling “harmful” technologies and paving the way for fair and equitable AI. It also plans to collaborate with research and policy organizations across Europe and Africa to strengthen international accountability measures and policy recommendations. Professor John D Kelleher, director of ADAPT and chair of AI at Trinity College, said: “We are proud to welcome the AI Accountability Lab to ADAPT’s vibrant community of multidisciplinary experts, all

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has said he wants homelessness figures to fall “within 12 months”. The number of people accessing emergency accommodation has increased at an almost constant rate in recent years, repeatedly breaking new records. The housing portfolio is held by Darragh O’Brien from Fianna Fáil. In the latest of Virgin Media’s “Big Interviews” with party leaders, Mr Martin said homelessness was his party’s top priority and the reason he sought the housing portfolio in the coalition government. The official figures from the Department of Housing look at the number of people accessing emergency accommodation services over the last week of each month, and are published at 2pm on the last Friday of the following month. October figures are expected on polling day, November 29. The latest figures for the end of September show that 14,760 people were using such services, including 4,561 children – record levels for both metrics. The figures do not include rough sleepers, those who may be couch surfing or homeless in hospitals or prisons, and those in asylum seekers’ shelters or domestic violence centres. Mr Martin said his party would not disrupt the agreed process by publishing the figures before polling day. However, he accepted that there are “too many homeless people” and said homelessness is “very traumatic” for families. Speaking on Wednesday night, he said there was a need to “build more homes faster”, prevent homelessness and reduce the amount of time people rely on emergency accommodation. “It’s our job to get people out of emergency accommodation as quickly as we can, and get them a home as quickly as we can. “That’s why progress is being made to build 40,000 social homes, and we need to build 12,000 social homes a year, I think, to deal with homelessness.” Asked if he expected the figures to be uncomfortable, he said: “We’re already uncomfortable with the homelessness figures, so next Friday isn’t going to change that much.” Pressed on when he expected the figures to peak, Mr Martin said he did not have exact timelines and that additional supply needed to be ramped up. Asked when the figure would drop, he said: “I’d like to see that within the next 12 months but I can’t guarantee that. “The population is growing, and that’s all a factor. But we need to get up to 50,000 houses a year.” Elsewhere, he twice described the removal of Fianna Fáil’s coalition government with Sinn Féin. Mr Martin said Sinn Féin’s tax proposals would “destroy” Ireland’s entrepreneurial economy, as he appealed to Irish voters ahead of polling day on Friday. When asked how big the differences are between the two parties, he said: “They are very substantial, basically, in terms of the economic model we have in this country.” Mr Martin said the vast majority of Fianna Fáil members agreed with his position. Pushing the history of Fianna Fáil to enter a coalition

Entering the nursing profession is both rewarding and challenging, especially for new nurses transitioning from the classroom to the clinical setting. While the early stages of a nursing career can be overwhelming, understanding common challenges and how to overcome them can ease the transition and help new nurses build confidence and resilience. Here are some of the main challenges new nurses face and practical strategies to overcome them. 1. Adjusting to a Fast-paced Environment One of the biggest changes for new nurses is the fast pace of the clinical setting. Transitioning from a controlled learning environment to handling multiple patients, procedures and emergencies can be daunting. How to overcome it: Prioritize Tasks: Develop a habit of prioritizing tasks based on urgency. Creating a checklist each shift can help stay organized and ensure no tasks are forgotten. Use Time Management Tools: Try time management tools like shift planners or digital reminders. These can help allocate time to specific tasks, especially during busy periods. Seek mentorship: Experienced nurses can share valuable tips for managing a fast-paced environment. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice or to see how they go about their shifts. 2. Managing Stress and Preventing Burnout The physical and emotional demands of nursing can be overwhelming, leading to stress and, ultimately, burnout. Long shifts, high patient loads, and exposure to difficult situations can take a toll on mental and physical health. How to overcome it: Establish Self-Care Routines: Make time for activities that promote relaxation, such as exercise, meditation, or recreation. Self-care is essential to maintaining mental health. Set Boundaries: Avoid extra shifts or tasks that can lead to burnout. It’s okay not to say if it costs your well-being. Seek Support: Many hospitals and healthcare institutions offer mental health resources, counseling and support groups for staff. Accepting these can provide emotional relief and coping strategies. 3. Building Confidence in Clinical Skills It’s natural to be unsure of skills when starting out. Procedures that require precision, such as inserting IV lines or managing medications, can be intimidating. How to overcome it: Supervised Practice: Whenever possible, practice with guidance from experienced nurses. Repetition will help build confidence. Benefit from Simulation Labs: Many facilities offer simulation labs where nurses can practice skills in a safe, controlled environment. Stay on Education: Regularly reviewing clinical guidelines, attending workshops, or even watching demonstration videos can improve your skills and help you feel more competent. 4. Effective Communication with Patients and Colleagues New nurses often struggle to communicate assertively, especially with senior staff or in challenging patient interactions. Miscommunication can lead to misunderstandings or mistakes in care. How to overcome it: Active Listening Exercise:
