We couldn't be more proud of Tracey Gates, Trauma Program Injury Prevention and Outreach Coordinator, for being awarded the HCA Healthcare Innovative Injury Prevention Program of the Year. Tracey was instrumental in developing the Rachel Silver Distracted Driving Program that she teaches at local high schools and in drivers education programs. This program aims to aid new drivers with the knowledge of safe driving and what distracted driving looks like. She also helps empower the students to be active passengers and advocate for themselves in unsafe situations. Today, Mission Hospital celebrated 28 graduates of our Nurse Aide Training Program (NATP)! We are honored to be able to educate and develop the next generation of nursing assistants right here in our hospital. Participation in the six week NATP is a paid position, which allows those who have an interest in a healthcare career, but face time constraints or financial obstacles, to obtain the education they desire. At the end of the program, students sit for the NC Certified Nursing Assistant exam so they can begin providing care to our community within our hospital. Congratulations to Renee White, practice specialist with Mission Children's, for being honored with a Black Legacy Award presented by Black Wall Street AVL. As president of the EAST END-VALLEY STREET NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION INC for the last 11 years, Renee hosts meetings and activities that allow people to build relationships and improve the community through civic engagement and celebration. She is the Board Vice President of the Asheville Community Land Trust, which develops opportunities for affordable housing and home ownership. She is a member of St. James AME Church, where she holds many leadership positions, including the Rosa Walker Advancement Initiative, which engages local youth. Her history of showing up for this community is long, as is the list of accolades for the undaunted energy she brings to making a difference “for everyone. Not just one. Not just some. Everybody.” As Black History Month comes to a close, the determination and spirit of Black leaders like Renee does not. We are lucky to have her as part of our Mission Health team and our HCA Healthcare Black Colleague Network. “If I’m helping somebody, that’s when I’m most comfortable,” Renee said, adding, “That’s why I love my children at the specialty practice so much. #DYK that according to the International Brain Injury Association, around one million people are cared for in US emergency rooms as a result of Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) every year? The western NC community is not immune to this life altering injury and Mission Hospital's trauma team is here to support our community members impacted by TBIs. The first Tuesday of every month, you can find our trauma team hosting a support group for our community members who have been impacted by a traumatic physical injury.
