??? ???????? ???? ???????? ?????????? ?????????????????? ????????????????! ?? This Valentine’s Day, we’re celebrating something we truly love—progress in broadband expansion! Every new connection means more families can work, learn, and access the resources they need from home. That’s something worth celebrating! Here are some milestones that make our hearts skip a beat: ? ???????? ?????????????????? ??????????????????: According to FCC data, 2.6 million more locations had access to 100/20 Mbps or higher in June 2024 compared to June 2023. Of those, 2.2 million locations were in rural areas. Cable broadband also expanded significantly, reaching 1.1 million more locations overall, including 700,000 rural locations. ? ?????????? ??????????- ?????? ???????????????? ??????????????????????: In November, the FCC released the 5th version of the national broadband map with data from June 2024. The number of unserved or underserved locations has dropped from 8.8 million in the previous version to 7.5 million—a 15% decrease in just six months and a 37% improvement since the first broadband map 18 months ago. ? ???????????? ???????????????? ????????????: The median U.S. download speed, according to Ookla, reached 286 Mbps as of September 2024. Higher speeds mean more reliable video calls, faster file downloads, and smoother online experiences for businesses, students, and remote workers. ? ???????? ?????????????? ????????????????: The BEAD program is moving forward, bringing funding closer to the communities that need it most. All 56 eligible entities have their BEAD Initial Proposals approved, 39 states have concluded their state challenge process, 22 states have begun selecting service providers, and 3 states—Delaware, Louisiana, and Nevada—have completed service provider selection and released their Final Proposal for public comment. There’s still work to do, but today, we’re taking a moment to appreciate how far we’ve come. These milestones show what’s possible when we work together to close the digital divide. Jason’s leadership ensures that projects are completed efficiently and with exceptional care. By fostering collaboration and sharing his expertise, Jason not only helps deliver successful projects but also creates a positive and supportive work environment here at Mission Broadband. Outside of work, you can find Jason crafting custom signs and cribbage boards for his business, Maine Wood Signs. He loves relaxing by the lake, BBQing, and spending time with his wife Kelly, their kids, grandkids, and four pets (a lab and three cats). Mission Broadband worked with the New Hampshire Electric Cooperative in 2019 to begin providing broadband services to their members, and today, we’re supporting the state with their BEAD Final Proposal as they work toward even greater connectivity. While our work with NH focuses on strategic BEAD planning, it’s exciting to see additional progress across the state. Recently, 28,000 new addresses were connected through the Capital Projects Fund, with more than 48,000 expected to be connected by December 2026. These milestones bring NH closer to bridging the digital divide and ensuring every corner of the state stays connected. Congratulations to the states of Louisiana and Delaware on receiving National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) approval on their Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Final Proposals. This is a crucial step toward expanding broadband access for unserved and underserved communities nationwide. ???????? ???????????????? As of today, Louisiana and Delaware are the first two states to receive NTIA approval for their BEAD Final Proposals. Louisiana was the first state approved, with $1.3 billion allocated to connect 140,030 households and businesses. Delaware’s approval followed, with $107 million dedicated to connecting 5,721 households and businesses. Other states, like Nevada, are expected to receive their approval soon, marking an exciting time for broadband expansion across the country. But 31% of customers still report dissatisfaction—a significant gap that network providers need to address. According to Tian Wang, Survey Research Manager at Consumers’ Report: “We’ve observed consistent dissatisfaction among CR members in recent years when it comes to their telecommunication services, and internet service is no exception. On December 2, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) released draft performance measures guidance for BEAD last-mile network projects. What does this mean? The notice (still in its public comment phase) is designed to give eligible entities more clarity on how the performance of funded broadband projects will be evaluated to meet BEAD’s goals of delivering reliable and fast internet to underserved communities. The guidance focuses on standards for measuring speed, latency, and reliability in last-mile deployment projects. As the notice states, “BEAD-funded last-mile broadband deployment projects are required to meet specific capacity, latency, and reliability standards.” Mission Broadband can help eligible entities determine the most effective methodologies for measuring these performance standards, ensuring compliance with BEAD regulations.
