Gerald Kane, a digital transformation expert who joined Terry in 2022 as part of a university-wide AI hiring initiative and was named head of the Department of Management Information Systems in January, says this only raises the ceiling of what’s possible. “We’re in the first inning of a nine-inning game,” he says. “We are only scratching the surface. Partially because the technology is not there yet, but also because we haven’t really figured out the best use cases for it.” Which is to say: If you think ChatGPT and Gemini are cool, wait till you see what’s next. https://lnkd.in/epdrngAM

Keep up to date with the MIS department at UGA’s Terry College of Business
关于我们
Management Information Systems at the University of Georgia Terry College of Business For over 35 years, the MIS Advisory Board has been the primary point of contact between industry and the Department of MIS. It helps ensure that the MIS curriculum meets the needs of employers, supports cutting-edge research, provides speakers for classes, funds scholarships for outstanding MIS students, and more. It is an invaluable resource for the MIS program at the Terry College of Business. Members bring a diverse spectrum of expertise to the board, which provides a broad perspective on new initiatives. For example, current membership includes CIOs, partners in consulting firms, recent graduates, and current student representatives. Companies that heavily recruit UGA MIS students are often corporate members. People who have a strong affinity with Georgia’s MIS program hold individual memberships.

Did you know that in addition to being one of the Top 10 programs at a public institution, The University of Georgia's Management Information Systems department was one of the first MIS programs around? In 1969, the Departments of Management and Accounting created a program called Business Systems. Though it was a joint program, it was administered and quickly assimilated by Management. The program’s name was changed to Management Information Systems in 1971, becoming one of the first such programs in the country. Go Dawgs! https://lnkd.in/ey6AdGyn - UGA MIS

Perhaps the most impactful part of the MIS Advisory Board meeting every semester is when we break out into groups to gather information from the industry partners on our board. Last week we met with our Black and Red Level board representatives in roundtable sessions that included: Jobs for MIS students, AI in the classroom, cloud computing, the role of business process management in the MIS curriculum, information security, data analytics, and more. Thanks to all of our board partners for their helpful advice at the Spring MIS Advisory Board meeting!

Nick Berente, Professor of IT Analytics and Operations from the University of Notre Dame, visited us in Athens last week. While at the Terry College, Dr. Berente presented his new research on Ethical Artificial Intelligence, worked with our cohort of PhD students to hone their research projects, and met individually with Terry faculty. We're already looking forward to his next visit!

The Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grant program at UGA supports the creation of university-wide interdisciplinary research teams that tackle grand challenges and build connected ecosystems for sustainable innovation. Our MIS faculty were included in three out of the ten project teams that were awarded a grant for the 2024 cycle: Akshat Lakhiwal, Aaron Schecter, Jiyong Park, Gerald Kane, Marie-Claude Boudreau, and John Rios.
Ten university-wide projects devoted to advancing interdisciplinary research across multiple application areas have been awarded Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants as part of the 2023 cohort. The Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grant Program was launched in 2017 and offered again in 2019 and 2021 through a partnership between The University of Georgia offices of Research and Public Service and Outreach. Its success is reflected by the value of external grants subsequently won by teams to pursue work initiated through these seed grants. These 10 awards were chosen from 70 proposals and reflect a commitment of $1 million from University of Georgia President Jere W. Morehead. For the first time, this year’s program has two tracks: New Frontiers and Cluster Engagement. The New Frontiers track is intended to support early-stage exploration of potentially transformative research that addresses grand challenges at the community, state, national, or global level. https://lnkd.in/dwFrrRHE

The MIS department would like to extend a warm welcome to Jan Recker who is joining us from the University of Hamburg as the first international scholar to visit Athens as a part of the newly-launched Terry International Business Scholar program. Over the next few weeks, Dr. Recker will be working with PhD and undergraduate students in both Information Systems and International Business. He brings deep expertise in understanding how digital technologies influence organizational transformations, particularly in the context of sustainable development.
