Celebrating International Women’s Day spotlighting women’s health at SXSW. What a treat to sit down with Ingeborg Investments portfolio company Gameto CEO Dina Radenkovic Turner, Mirvie CEO Maneesh Jain, Frida CEO Chelsea Hirschhorn! It’s thrilling to see the momentum in women’s health. Best of all, it is often female entrepreneurs solving problems they experience themselves and female funders understanding the value and potential of their ideas.

Pregnancy complications like preeclampsia, preterm birth, and fetal growth restriction are dangerous for mom and baby as they can strike without warning—sending pregnancies into a crisis overnight. For women who are healthy and don’t have risk factors for complications like #preeclampsia, the experience is harrowing and surreal in what should be the most joyous time of a parent’s life. But what if we told you it didn’t have to be like this? That, instead, we can chart a new course in pregnancy health based on a precise understanding of the unique #biology of each pregnancy? Mirvie is doing just this, finally bringing precision medicine into prenatal care. By being able to finally understand which pregnancies are truly at high risk for complications based on the biology of the developing pregnancy, this breakthrough can allow women to plan ahead with their clinicians and care teams and do everything possible to prevent dangerous complications like preeclampsia by adhering to evidence-based strategies like taking daily aspirin, monitoring blood pressure regularly, and incorporating lifestyle changes like diet and exercise. Thank you to Dr. Diana Ramos and the Office of the California Surgeon General for hosting a dynamic summit on #cardiovascular health during #pregnancy. It was fantastic to be among clinicians, providers, researchers, entrepreneurs, payers, policymakers and more to share ideas and discuss solutions for tackling hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, which significantly influence #hearthealth in women, including #preeclampsia - a leading cause of pre-term birth and maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Often overlooked, one of the most crucial indicators of a woman’s heart health comes during pregnancy as it's a stress test on the body and heart. Did you know… ??Preeclampsia survivors who experienced preterm delivery have an 8-10 fold increased risk of death due to cardiovascular disease in their lifetime. ??Preeclampsia is associated with a 4x increased risk of heart failure and a 2x increased risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and death because of coronary heart or cardiovascular disease. ??More pregnant women are experiencing hypertension - including preeclampsia - as rates have doubled in recent years. In fact, hypertensive disorders impact 1 in 6 pregnancies and preeclampsia impacts 1 in 12 pregnancies.? The Mirvie team was excited to demonstrate how our test can finally predict which pregnancies are at the highest risk for preeclampsia using #RNA, months before symptoms appear - creating a new window to intervene and do everything possible to prevent it. This can improve outcomes over a lifetime if you can prevent preeclampsia, including boosting long-term heart health.
