The story of last week affecting all segments of energy prices were politics, specifically tariffs. Some, like the Canadian ones, are set to go into place early this week. Energy futures markets fell due to negative consumer confidence while natural gas and electric prices were up thanks to the looming tariffs.

Mirabito is thrilled to announce a $16,500 donation to The DICK’S Foundation’s Sports Matter Program through our Kicks for a Cause campaign with Syracuse University Athletics! For every successful kick during home games this past season, we pledged $300—and thanks to an outstanding performance, we’re proud to support an initiative that ensures all young athletes have access to sports. To celebrate, we welcomed representatives from DICK’S Sporting Goods and Syracuse Sports Properties to our Mirabito Energy Products location on Bear Street, Syracuse for a check presentation with a special appearance by Syracuse Orange mascot - Otto! At Mirabito, we believe in giving back to the communities we serve, and we’re honored to contribute to a cause that provides kids with opportunities to play, grow, and succeed. Energy futures markets finished slightly lower last week despite nearly 4 days of steady gains. Those gains were wiped out on Friday due to strong inventory and economic concerns. Natural gas, however, is up due to high demand (COLD!) which is causing an inventory deficit. In the electric world, prices continue to rise to more than a penny and a half higher than previous year. Also to note, BP withdrew its application for a major downstate NY offshore wind project. This comes in light of the Trump Administration's "halt & review" stance on wind projects going forward.

A few things to talk about in regards to energy markets last week. Refined products (gas & diesel) prices increased last week in reaction to President Trump's recent Executive Orders (new tariffs). Meanwhile, crude oil prices dropped amidst economic and demand concerns. Natural gas prices are up as inventory is on track to end the current heating season in a deficit to the five-year average. This is primarily due to the continued cold weather blanketing the Northeast. In New York State, electric prices continue to rise as the load is nearly 20% higher than prior year. This highlights New York's push toward electrification and its effect on pricing.

Energy futures markets reversed course last week taking a downward turn. The anticipation of what incoming President Trump's tariff and energy policies might look like was top of mind for traders. Prices made up some ground at the end of the week thanks to continued cold temps and high demand. The frigid weather has also contributed to higher natural gas prices.

Energy futures markets showed gains across the board last week. The primary factors were strong sanctions against Russian oil and, you guessed it, the extreme cold impacting the Northeast. Helping to temper the increases was the likely cease fire between Israel and Hamas. Natural gas prices also continue to climb due to the cold weather and storage withdraws.

Last week, our team had the incredible opportunity to fuel the Syracuse of Syracuse Tug Boat while it was on land for maintenance. This hardworking barge plays a vital role in our waterways, and we’re proud to help keep it ready for action! Supporting local industry and keeping things moving—on land and water—is just part of what we do. Join us in wishing the Syracuse Tug a smooth return to the waters!
