The Minutia team is excited and humbled to receive another grant from The National Institutes of Health! The award of this Phase I SBIR grant will help advance Minutia’s mission to create a functional cure for Type 1 diabetes by supporting our work to create insulin-producing islets that are resistant to autoimmune attack, and nanosensor technology to measure the intracellular response to inflammation. Meet the team! This week's featured team member is Associate Scientist Jessica C.. Read on to learn a bit about Jessica, and the impressive work she does! Jessica Chavez is a?perfectionist. Give her a puzzle, and Jessica will not only work out every possible solution, through laser focus and diligence, but will also determine which solution is the most elegant, and meticulously document every aspect of the winning fix, from start to finish.?? ? Jessica became interested in applying her expertise in cell biology to the puzzle that is #T1D when she met a young boy with diabetes and observed, over the course of several years, how much the condition impacted his everyday life. ? At Minutia, Jessica is an integral part of the #CellTherapy team. Through a meticulous and exacting 20-27 day protocol she grows, characterizes, and observes stem cells, using Flow Cytometry, as they develop into insulin producing beta cells. Jessica also leads the in vivo efforts for the cell team, implanting the newly synthesized cells into mice to test their abilities to produce insulin and reverse diabetes in pre-clinical models. In this way, Jessica is deeply integrated – from start to finish - in making and testing the cells that will one day change the lives of patients.?And when a batch of cells doesn’t work??Jessica’s back at it, hammering out that process until it’s perfect. Jessica believes that cell therapies are the future of medicine - particularly treatment of chronic conditions - and that every batch of insulin-producing cells she and the team create in the Minutia lab brings them one step closer to creating a treatment for that boy, and the millions of others with T1D.? ? Outside the lab, Jessica loves to hike the beautiful Bay Area mountains, make 3-dimensional art out of found objects, and read books about the world and the people in it. #biotech #type1diabetes #startup
