Last week, Stephanie Markert, a principal in CLA’s Assurance practice, took part in the Minnesota Society of CPAs Day at the Minnesota Capitol. Markert has been a staunch advocate for creating alternative pathways to CPA licensure. In 2023, she helped introduce legislation aimed at removing barriers — specifically, the 150-hour education requirement. In early 2024, CLA CEO Jen Leary testified at a Minnesota Senate hearing, sharing how the 150-hour requirement is often a barrier for new accountants, one that could have impacted her own career had it applied to her at the time. Since that hearing, momentum has only grown. States like Ohio and Virginia have already passed similar legislation, and now, the AICPA and NASBA have proposed updates supporting 120 credit hours plus two years of experience as a path to licensure. The conversation is shifting, and real progress is happening. As Stephanie says, “The CPA exam is the gold star — the minimum standard of quality — while additional education should be a personal choice.” With another trip to the Capitol ahead, she and others are continuing to advocate for meaningful change—ensuring more talented individuals have the opportunity to join and shape the future of the profession.

Our bill advanced in the House of Representatives!
It looks like the third time may be the charm for Minnesota legislation that provides an alternative path to CPA licensure that does NOT require 150 hours of college credit hours (the time frame math on that is five years). At a hearing on it Tuesday Republican MN State Rep. Scott Van Binsbergen, who introduced (H.F. 1458) that would change the state's requirements in a bid to tackle the accountant shortage, noted the growing national momentum behind the initiative that was not evident in previous years. Then Cap O'Rourke of the Minnesota Association of Small Cities, Stephanie Markert of CLA (CliftonLarsonAllen), one of the state's largest accounting firms, Minnesota State Auditor Julie Blaha, and Boz Bostrom, a professor of accounting and finance at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University testified in favor of the legislation. Just before adjournment the show of strong support drew a quip from one of the legislators: "Why did you have such a lack of testifiers today?" #accounting #accountingtalentshortage
