GREAT NEWS! Today, Hennepin County became the ninth of 10 geographic areas in #Minnesota to functionally end veteran homelessness!? ? Effectively ending veteran homelessness – a certification from the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH), the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs – doesn't?mean veterans do not experience homelessness, but when they do, the?system is prepared to quickly respond and connect veterans to housing and the supports needed to sustain it.? ? “Minnesota is committed to providing the best services and care for our veterans. Today we are one step closer to becoming the fourth state in the country to end veteran homelessness,”?said Governor Tim Walz.?“This wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated team at the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) and those across Hennepin County working tirelessly to meet the needs of every veteran. I extend my gratitude to everyone who has worked to bring us closer to achieving this goal.”? ?? Council meetings are an opportunity to hear updates and share successes from?the implementation of Minnesota’s Crossroads to Justice strategic plan for housing, racial, and health justice for people facing homelessness. They’re also a chance to dig deeper on the persistent challenges we face in addressing homelessness and what it will take to alleviate them. ? ? Staff at People Serving People like to say they’re not just in life saving work, but in life affirming work. ? ? Each night, 100 families who are facing #homelessness have a safe room of their own at People Serving People’s emergency shelter in #Minneapolis. While there, families can participate in a strengths-based, client-centered approach to?work one-on-one with staff advocates to address their barriers to stability. Three nutritious meals, incorporating dietary and cultural considerations, are served every day. A top-rated on-site Early Childhood Development program assists with school readiness, while buses from dozens of school districts across Hennepin County pick up kids each day to keep them?learning in the communities they’ve grown up in.? ? MICH staff heard how each of these pieces are essential on a recent tour and discussion at the shelter, and learned how People Serving People is hoping to support their guests even more moving forward. Through our Crossroads to Justice strategic plan, the Minnesota Interagency Council on Homelessness committed to five bold Results that will drive significant movement towards housing, racial and health justice. ? ? Result 3 states, “A robust crisis response, geared toward housing outcomes, supports people who are unsheltered, in emergency shelters, and in community.”? ? Three key Strategies support this Result: ? ?? Invest in and support additional outreach responses that reach people wherever they are and help make connections to housing providers.? ? ?? Increase safe indoor crisis options statewide that are low barrier, harm reduction, and culturally responsive to meet people’s needs.? ? ? ??
