关于我们
The Minnesota Geotechnical Society (MGS) was established in 1969, as an independent, nonprofit organization. At the turn of 2019, MGS officially partnered with ASCE, becoming the Minnesota Geotechnical Society - a Geo-Institute Chapter (MGS-GI). Our mission stands firm. We provide a forum for geotechnical knowledge, encourage communication with other technical disciplines, and facilitate networking among engineers, geologists, educators, students, technicians, and contractors. We strive to connect students to geotechnical professionals for career opportunities and scholarships. Membership in the society is open to anyone engaged in activities related to civil engineering, engineering geology, soil science, land conservation, and planning. See the website to join or renew your membership today.

LAST CALL: Attend MGS-GI May 2024 Meeting May 2024 Meeting - Featuring an ASCE Traveling Lecturer Please join us for the last meeting of the 2023-2024 season! This month will feature Dr. Robert B. Gilbert, P.E., Ph.D., D.GE, NAE. The topic for this month will be "Lessons about Managing Risk from Forensic Geotechnical Engineering" The practice of managing risk is guided by lessons learned from failures and successes. This talk will describe three recent case histories in forensic geotechnical engineering: 1) quality control problems in the construction of drilled shafts that required significant repairs; 2) deterioration of a waste containment system that led to release of contaminants; and 3) failure of a natural slope that destroyed public and private property. The lessons learned from these case histories include the importance of being ready for things to not go as expected, taking action quickly to address problems as they arise in construction and operation, and being humble and transparent about the dynamics of nature. ROBERT B. GILBERT P.E., Ph.D., D.GE, NAE is Chair of the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. He joined the faculty in 1993 after practicing as a geotechnical engineer for five years with Golder Associates Inc. His technical focus is the assessment, evaluation and management of risk for civil engineering systems. He has worked on a variety of large infrastructure projects, including the New Orleans levee system, the east span of the San Francisco Bay Bridge, the Rocky Mountain Arsenal waste disposal project, and many of the world’s largest offshore energy production systems. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2020. Our Happy Hour sponsor this month is Subsurface Constructors. Please thank a Subsurface Constructors Employee when you see them!
