“Be in the right rooms, with the right people.” Have you heard this advice? “Networking Nerds” like me know, there are no truer words. It’s not transactional advice. It’s the key that unlocks your potential. … And the potential of others. End of 2023, I needed something more. I didn’t know what was missing. I just knew I wasn’t finding it through my usual circle of colleagues and friends. Don’t get me wrong, I love those folks. There was something in my core that knew I needed to take my business to a new level. I needed to be challenged. I needed to think bigger about my business; community impact, industry impact. I knew that “challenge” had to come from perfect strangers -with more experience, different experience, and who were uninfluenced by perceived limitations. 2024 Goal: Seek out all opportunities to meet people. Any opportunity. Real conversations. Real connections, not future opportunities. Help others if I can. Do it all with zero friends or colleagues by my side. Abandon my social crutches. Force myself to talk to people I don’t know. A big focus: Entrepreneurship events. One of the first entrepreneur events I attended was the MN Entrepreneur Kickoff event, hosted by the MN Entrepreneur Network and planned by Lois Josefson. Here, you will find entrepreneurs of all varieties; veteran owners, growth mode hustlers; new startups. You’ll find folks working in tech, of course. But startups are not all tech… Apparel Lifestyle Care Services Authors Marketers Inventors You name it, they are there. Plus so many resources: Coaches Teachers Connectors State and local business resources VCs, PEs, LOCs, grants, all types of funding Keynotes Guest Speakers Panels Student Startups Breakout Classes Featured Experts The impromptu conversations and inspiring insights are top notch. You wanna talk about “being in the room?” THIS is one of those rooms. When business owners (or wannabe business owners) get in a room together, inspiration soars… in a way that is unlike being at an industry event or happy hour with friends. These people get things done. They have big ideas; they execute them. They see things differently. They inspire you to dream bigger Then go them in a strategic and ambitious way. Action oriented. Risk tolerant. Creative thinking. Truly remarkable. I’ve been looking forward to going again, since last year’s event wrapped up. Hard to believe, a year ago I walked into the room, knowing virtually no one, having met Lori Ryan just a week earlier, hearing about the event from her. And now, both Lori and I have been asked to join the impressive list of AMA Experts at the event this year. When an honor!
