Minnesota Emerging Software Advisory (MESA) is a mentoring organization comprised of C-level software and information technology veterans with strong local business roots. We have come together to help spark a movement to help make Minnesota’s software economy rank among the most vibrant and respected in the nation. We believe the key to rekindling Minnesota’s once-shining tech star lies in a more basic form of social networking – mentoring, collaboration and connections. Over the last 50 years Minnesota has played a role in shaping the information technology industry. From the dawn of the computer age to today’s mobile Internet revolution, Minnesota tech companies have provided the products and technology that has powered progress in the realms of computing, communications and collaboration. Not so long ago, Minnesota’s information technology industry was admired with the same reverence bestowed on the Silicon Valley, Boston and Austin today. But are our best days behind us? Despite some of our more recent success stories – such as Lawson, Digital River, Retek, Stellent and Compellent, Minnesota’s computer tech star has dimmed over the last decade. While innovation remains one of the State’s bedrock virtues, innovation alone is not enough to ensure we remain an industry beacon in a rapidly changing and competitive global landscape. Our goal is to restore Minnesota's software economy to national prominence.

As we celebrate National Entrepreneurship Week, I wanted to take a minute to reflect on my own experiences as a business owner and share key insights for anyone launching their own business: ?? Start with the Basics Take the time to learn the fundamentals of running a business, including how to hire and fire people, read a P&L, and how to sell. Business fundamentals are the same, don’t shortcut learning them. ?? Grow Your Network Seek out mentors and build your network. Surround yourself with people you trust, who want you to succeed, and who can guide you to success. These need to be people who have built successful businesses. My wife always says, “If you wouldn’t ask for their advice, don’t listen to their criticism.” If they haven’t built a company successfully before, they are NOT the right mentor. ? Product Market Fit If you have a cool product, that’s great. But make sure people are willing to buy it. Do your market research and understand the customer’s willingness to pay first. ?? People Power Hire great people who complement your leadership. Then empower them with the right tools and resources to be successful and work through them, not around them. ?? Develop Core Values Core values define an organization’s culture. Build yours, stick to them, and hire people who align and can drive the business forward.?If you don't, they will naturally occur and may become something you never intended. #NationalEntrepreneurshipWeek #Entrepreneurship #Leadership #Startups #DispatchIt

Revolution's Rise of the Rest has traveled the country for 10 years to understand startup ecosystems beyond the coasts. For the 2024 report, they revisit Minneapolis—one of the three cities covered in their very first report. In the years since that very first look, they document that seed and early-stage investment in Minneapolis-St. Paul startups have risen substantially, reflecting the region’s growing influence in health tech, fintech, agtech, and more.
