Stoked for standards! That's right, I’m totally stoked for biochar standards because they bring clarity, credibility, and confidence to the commercial market. Standardization isn’t just about compliance, it’s about increasing domestic buyer trust, unlocking new and impactful business opportunities, and driving market demand.

Why This Matters!
?? Clear Specs, Easier Sales – Buyers want to know exactly what they’re getting. Industry standards create a common language for biochar quality, making transactions smoother and reducing the back-and-forth over confusing specifications. International Biochar Initiative standards (published in 2015) utilize test methods that are difficult for most labs in North American to comply with. This leads to backlogs in testing capacity from a limited number of compliant labs willing to adopt the expense and time required to comply with IBI specs. Faster labs = faster go to market strategies for producers. Everyone wins.
?? Bigger Buyers, Bigger Deals – Scale industries like ag, construction, and carbon markets need consistent product performance. Standardized biochar makes it easier to integrate into corporate procurement pipelines. Again, domestic US investments will have increased confidence in a modern USBI North American Standard that is easier to understand and adopt. This means more GREEN JOBS and domestic capacity.
?? Market Growth & Predictable Prices – Recognized standards means domestic biochar becomes a trusted commodity rather than a niche product. This is a big deal! Trust means higher volume contracts, long-term agreements, and better pricing stability. For folks like me, this is the golden ticket to a bright future with more carbon going into soils and the built environment.
?? Regulatory Alignment & Incentives – As policies around carbon markets, soil amendments, and green building materials evolve, having standard-compliant products keeps biochar eligible for funding, credits, and government programs.
Bottom line? Standards = Scale! Scale! Scale! ↗? IMHO, this USBI North American Standard turns biochar from a specialty product into a mainstream commercial solution! Biochar becomes easier to sell, ship, and integrate into industrial supply chains. That’s great news for brokers, producers, and end users alike.
