The Office of the Minnesota Attorney General has?filed a settlement, also known as a consent judgment, in Ramsey County District Court that permanently bans David Singleton, the president of five Minnesota nonprofits, from incorporating or serving as an officer or director of nonprofits in the future. The settlement resolves a lawsuit filed by Attorney General Ellison that accused Singleton of engaging in a deceptive pattern of behavior by founding or taking over nonprofits with governmental sounding names to sow confusion for his own profit. The lawsuit also alleges Singleton engaged in the unauthorized practice of law by claiming to provide legal services despite not being a licensed legal professional. The public may submit complaints to the Attorney General about nonprofit directors and officers putting their own interests before the charity’s interests.?Complaints may be submitted by using a form on the Attorney General’s website. The Attorney General’s Office can also be contacted by phone at (651) 296-3353 (Metro area), (800) 657-3787 (Greater Minnesota), or (800) 627-3529 (Minnesota Relay). #ConsumerProtection #NonProfits #Charities #Settlement #Lawsuit #PeoplesLawyer https://lnkd.in/gBpSYtNg

Yesterday evening, Minnesota Attorney General Ellison co-led a coalition of 20 attorneys general in?filing a lawsuit in federal court in Maryland against numerous federal agencies for conducting illegal mass layoffs of federal probationary employees. These mass firings will cause irreparable burdens and expenses to the states, both to support recently unemployed workers, and to review and adjudicate claims of unemployment assistance. Moreover, the unlawful layoffs will harm state finances and undermine vital state-federal partnerships. “Whether Donald Trump likes it or not, there are laws governing large-scale reductions in the federal government’s workforce that his administration must abide by,”?said Attorney General Ellison.?“Trump’s unlawful mass firings have been needlessly cruel, chaotic, and harmful to many people, including the state of Minnesota, so I am taking the Trump Administration to court.” Joining Attorney General Ellison in filing the lawsuit are Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown and District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb, who co-led the coalition with Attorney General Ellison, and the attorneys general of Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawai?i, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin. https://lnkd.in/gRjr3eSX

Attorney General Ellison led a coalition of 20 attorneys general in filing an?amicus brief?in?Wilcox v. Trump?in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia supporting Gwynne Wilcox, a member of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), in her lawsuit against President Donald Trump. “Today, I’m standing up to Donald Trump’s attempt to gut protections for working people across the country by shutting down the NLRB’s ability to function,”?said Attorney General Ellison.?“The NLRB protects workers’ ability to stand up for themselves by forming a union and bargaining for better wages and working conditions. Taking it offline will make it far easier for the rich and powerful to take advantage of working people and engage in unfair labor practices. This is just the latest example of Donald Trump trying to break the United States government to appease his billionaire friends and I will not stand for it.” Joining Attorney General Ellison in submitting this brief are the attorneys general from Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawai’i, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin. https://lnkd.in/gVqrX_4h
