Think Different
I often get asked by VCs and others “is generative AI the next internet or mobile?” The short answer is no. The internet was part of the Information Age. It was about taking a piece of data, copying it with high fidelity, and distributing it to the world. Mobile was another example of that but even better, because with mobile you could reach people out in the world, not just at their desks. But that's really not too different from the printing press either, right? It's better, it's a larger scaling factor, it's faster distribution but it's effectively the same idea. Generative AI is different. Generative AI creates something on demand that is custom to the particular situation. It’s not about copying. It's not about data or information. It's about compute. If you look at search, search is an Information Age technology. You build an index and then someone comes by later, types a query, and you retrieve the information from that index. Which means I can't give you a MUCH better search result. Maybe I can give you a slightly better search result by searching a little deeper in the index but I'm not going to fundamentally change the quality of the answer by orders of magnitude. A good enough answer gets indexed, and unless the search engine finds something better on the internet, which is a needle in a hay stack, the quality of the answer is not going to improve that much over time. With generative AI it's very different. If I am creating something custom for you, and if I dedicate twice the compute, four times the compute, or even a thousand times the compute, the answer can and will be better.
