Improving Equity and Employment: Insights from Prof. Karthik Muralidharan during the Post Budget Webinar on BUILDING RURAL PROSPERITY & RESILIENCE In a recent discussion, Prof. Kartik Muralidharan, Tata Chancellor's Professor of Economics, University of California San Diego; and author of Accelerating India’s Development highlighted the significance of enhancing the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), emphasizing that timely payments are crucial for promoting equity, improving wages, and fostering market employment. He also mentioned TN ICDS study (JPE 2024) which evaluated the impact of various approaches on early childhood development in Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS). He emphasised that the most effective idea by far is to hire an extra worker focused on pre-school education.
