Mining companies have set their global carbon emission targets and are rapidly seeking and adopting mine electrification solutions, largely driven by the success of battery technologies. Our consortium aims to turbocharge the development of such capabilities, which is why companies like Mining3 have come on board as an industry partner in support of our CRC bid. Modern lithium-ion batteries have demonstrated high levels of safety in the automotive industry: however, they are now being used in high duty, high vibration, wet, acidic, and other challenging environmental conditions, which is raising significant questions about their safe use and response to incidents, particularly in underground operations. Mining3 sees the need to answer the fundamental questions around the behaviour of various battery chemistries when confronted with these challenging mining conditions and is looking forward to working with the Minerals to Megawatts CRC.
