Mining engineers use science and engineering principles to safely extract minerals and provide raw materials for industrial processes. Mining engineers work in all kinds of mines and environments to provide critical materials (e.g. lithium and rare earth elements) and other materials (e.g. aggregates, metals, diamonds, and industrial minerals like gypsum) to support our way of life.

Did you know Missouri University of Science and Technology is the No. 1 school in the nation when it comes to students and recent graduates taking the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying's Fundamentals of Engineering exam? Here is a graphic from the 2023 NCEES Squared publication showing the top-10 schools.
Providing outreach like this is one of the main goals of the Missouri S&T Experimental Mine. It is important to us that we use the facility to educate the general public about #mining and #explosives.
Because who doesn't like blowing stuff up on a Friday?!? Our colleagues across University of Missouri gathered in Rolla last week for a strategy and goal setting event. They were treated to a mine tour and explosives demonstration at our Kennedy Experimental Mine. Tom Bachmann and Felena Budnik even got to "push the button". Over the past two days, I had the privilege of leading a group of sixty high school students in a summer camp focused on mining engineering. We delved into the importance of minerals in everyday life, toured the underground mine at Mining and Explosives Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, experienced the thrill of triggering a blast firsthand, and demonstrated battery ignition in my lab. This wasn't just about imparting knowledge; it was about igniting dreams. I hope that one day, these enthusiastic and curious young minds will become outstanding mining engineers, bringing fresh energy to our field. ???? #MiningEngineering #FutureStars #PassionForProfession

Explosives camp #40 was completed late Friday night. A day and a half to recuperate and camp #41 is already well underway. Thanks to Dyno, Doe Run, Orica and Nelson Brothers who provided scholarships, and Buckley Powder, Capital Quarries, Doe Run, and FTLW EOD for hosting us. For 2025 I am looking to increase our scholarships by forging more industry contacts including the defense sector. This year we piloted a program for larger companies where for $3K they got to pick and send one of their employees dependants and support a regular explosives camper. It worked very well. so if your company is interested let me know. Below campers have just reached the surface from 1,000 ft below at the Brushy Creek Mine where they toured blasting operations, + big boom!
Last week, S&T alum Marshall Koval, was on campus and met with our Universidad San Francisco de Quito contingent of students. We are so grateful for the partnership of USFQ and Lumina Gold in training outstanding Ecuadorian mining engineers. Thanks Marshall for the support and mentoring!
