Essentially, a Kanban is a pull system. It’s a dynamic signaling method where one process alerts another when it needs something, and it can be implemented in two distinct ways. #1. Imagine a final assembly line for a go-kart. Signals are sent upstream to request a steering wheel, engine, and wheels. The work centers responsible for these parts then get the green light to produce them. #2. Another way to set up a Kanban is through inventory management. Picture a plant with 5 parts for a go-kart. When 3 parts are used, a small card in front of the remaining 2 parts indicates that 3 more need to be produced to replenish the stock. It’s a clear signal to the production team to get to work. Manufacturers dread running out of inventory, as it can wreak havoc on order fulfillment. The aim is to always maintain a specific number of parts in stock. Using our example, the goal is to keep 5 parts on the shelf at all times. When 3 parts are taken, a signal is sent to produce 3 more.
