Marina Chakmakjian didn’t start out in transportation. She began her career as a case manager for at-risk youth and later transitioned to public safety with the City of San José. These days, she works as a Communications and Media Spokesperson for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) leading successful social media and internal communications campaigns. When she first began at VTA, she worried her skills wouldn’t translate. How could an Armenian-American woman with a background seemingly unrelated to transportation fit in at a transit agency? Soon, Marina realized that her skills in community engagement, public service, and communication are exactly what our industry needs. This extraordinary national STEAM competition empowers students to think critically and creatively about real-world problems that impact our nation’s critical infrastructure. This year’s theme is Get Going, Go Green! In 2024, the Earth is now nearly 2°F (1.1°C) hotter than it was in the 1800s. Storms, wildfires, and other natural disasters are becoming more common and more severe. In the U.S., transportation is one of the most significant contributors to climate change. The world is shifting toward a greener future, which creates new challenges. How can we ensure the future is safe and sustainable? Since 2006, the Mineta Summer Transportation Institute has offered 9th-12th grade students an immersive non-resident college experience—complete with the opportunity to earn transferable credits in environmental studies—all for free. Tam J. Guy presented an MTI-funded project, "Learning about Street Harassment on Transit: A Survey Instrument for Transit Agencies," at the 7th International Conference on Women and Gender in Transportation. This study was conducted in accordance with?California Senate Bill 1161 (2022), legislation that directed MTI to develop a reliable, easy-to-use survey instrument for collecting information from public transit passengers about the extent, location, and characteristics of any street harassment they experience.
