Reducing the #GenderGap in research & innovation by constructing contextually appropriate #GenderEquality plans!

From 2021-2025, we will work to increase women's participation in research and innovation to improve women’s career prospects, to improve gender balance in decision-making bodies in research organisations, and to include gender dimensions in relevant research content. We are increasing the quality and societal relevance of knowledge, technologies, and innovations produced. We are tackling gender imbalances through implementing gender equality plans that include both cultural and structural aspects. To remove barriers to hiring and career development for women in research, and to distinguish gender inequalities within governing bodies and evaluation committees. This ensures that actions align with the European Commission’s objectives for gender equality in European research. Gender data and strong governance are central to MINDtheGEPs and the gender equality plans we are creating. In each implementing organisation, we will map existing gender data, integrate existing data with new ad-hoc data and set up a gender data portal to make data accessible, to visualise where action might be required to reduce gender gaps. In addition, we will create and reinforce roles and bodies that support gender equality in research careers (both men's and women's) and conduct a series of trainings to empower women in junior positions and raise awareness of gender gaps among their senior colleagues. We will introduce work-family measures addressed to both men and women and set equality targets for decision-making boards and gender-sensitive research. Creating conditions for the endurance of the GEPs we develop beyond the project’s lifespan. In the end, we will develop good practice advice for the design of future gender equality plans and actions for systemic institutional change. Raising awareness about #GenderEquality is a cornerstone of implementing Gender Equality Plans. Training initiatives are key to ensure organisations are mature and knowledgeable enough to succeed in implementing the measures outlined in these plans. This holds true also for MINDtheGEPs partners who are implementing Gender Equality Plans. By taking a train-the-trainers approach, MINDtheGEPs partners develop gender equality training competencies sustainably. Slowly building a pool of competent trainers within their respective organisations, able to provide training through face-to-face sessions, online modules, guidance materials, and expert networks. Organisational change rests on the activation of formal and informal structures. Through MINDtheGEPs, the University of Turin was able to leverage an existing structure – an interdisciplinary centre for the study of women and gender – to build strong alliances with the governing bodies of the University. Gender equality plans have been a pre-requisite for receiving research funding from the Horizon Europe framework programme as of 2022, something that has helped accelerate the process in MINDtheGEPs partner organisations. According to Manuela Naldini, Professor of sociology at the University of Turin, the combination of access to project funding and the CIRSDe centre platform are two of the key factors for success. CIRSDe is the Research Centre for Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Turin. The big team, commitment to gender equality, and research connection at CIRSDe makes actions innovative. Great news! This week, the European Commission honoured the University of Gdańsk with the EU Award for Gender Equality Champions. The university was recognised for implementing its first #GenderEquality plan, as part of the work within the MINDtheGEPs project, paving the way for gender equality within research performing organisations in Poland. Through their efforts in MINDtheGEPs, the Uniwersytet Gdański provides strong examples of how to address gender issues and promote equality within academia. This includes a recent campaign on work-life balance, which aims to set a new standard for combining family life with an academic career. They have also demonstrated how to use the tools in the gender equality plan to create real change, creating commitment by engaging a diverse group of people in their community.
