In creating custom eLearning content, I've read a few times that you have to pick two of three categories: Fast, good, or cheap While this has historically been true, it seems to me like that paradigm is being broken down. At Mindsmith, our customers are finding that they can build good eLearning quickly and cheaply. One of our very first customers over a year ago said that what normally takes them *at least* a day and a half only takes an hour in Mindsmith -- that's at least a 12x faster. And the content gets better with every iteration and new model. And you just need to pay for a license to build it. Seems like a nice trifecta to me..

When we first started building Mindsmith, people often asked, "why don't the big guys just add an AI feature?" When someone asked this, my response has always been that...they will. But AI-native startups will win the AI game because of nimbleness and speed. Building an MVP of an AI feature is, frankly, very easy. Like I said in one of my previous posts, Zack built our first AI feature in an afternoon in 2022. The hard part of winning, though, is building a?*good*?AI feature. At Mindsmith, we have to constantly experiment, iterate, and pivot to get the best, most powerful AI engine (we're currently on our 10th version of our AI engine). I also think that AI-native startups will be the ones to keep pace with the rapidly changing AI landscape. As new models and capabilities arise, startups can take advantage of those quickly and begin iterating on them with active customers. It's fun to be an AI-native startup, and I'm bullish on the future of the cohort of AI-native companies building alongside us.

Top 5 learnings from our first time exhibiting at #DevLearn: 1. Handing out Mindsmith branded energy drinks was a REALLY good ice-breaker. Most people were exhausted, and our branded energy drinks were just what they needed. Started some amazing conversations with people just by giving them a drink and asking who they worked for. 2. People will sometimes give you a immediate reaction of "no" when their system two brain says "yes." Often I'd have people say "no" to the drink at first but then say "yes" when I prompted in a new way ("it's pina colada flavored!" "it's zero sugar" "theyre actually pretty good" etc etc). 3. Pay for the scanner. The badge scanner was kind of expensive, so we didn't pay for it. But now I have to spend hours looking people up on the app, linkedin, apollo, and updating hubspot. 4. Don't bring cards. People would often ask us for a card as a way to wrap up the conversation, but cards have no option for follow up. Instead, we'd say "we don't do cards. But we're booking demos for next week and the week after. Is earlier in the week or later usually better for you?" And around 75% of the time they'd pull out their calendars and schedule something right there. 5. Run a couple of role-plays beforehand. This is something we wish we'd done because it took a few conversations to get us warmed up. It would have been nice to hit the conference warm and ready from the very first person.

Zachary Allen built our first AI feature in an afternoon in Dec 2022, and it was a simple ChatGPT call. In those days, being a "chatGPT wrapper" was a bit embarrassing. We often got the objection of "can't I just do this in ChatGPT?" But we believed that the out-of-the-box models would continue to get smarter, cheaper, and faster. We believed that if we could get really good at working with them, aligning their output to the workflow of an eLearning designer, and making it super easy to access the power of the models, that people would gravitate to an AI-native authoring tool. There's still a lot to be proven, but I think that our assumptions have held up over time. One demonstration was the (semi) recent paper by two partners as Sequoia Capital (Sonya Huang and Pat Grady), where they talk about our type of business. They say: "Consumers stare at a blank prompt and don’t know what to ask. These are opportunities in the application layer. [...] They have sophisticated cognitive architectures that typically include multiple foundation models with some sort of routing mechanism on top, vector and/or graph databases for RAG, guardrails to ensure compliance, and application logic that mimics the way a human might think about reasoning through a workflow." Dallin Espiritu and I just got back from DevLearn, and it was a whirlwind! It was our first conference as an exhibitor, so we went into it hoping to book 30 demos..but we came away with 45! Many people resonating with our product and the problems we're solving. eLearning is changing, and Mindsmith is leading the way into that future.
