关于我们
A long-festering mental health crisis has been building in the United States for many years, created by a fractured health and mental health system, a pattern of discrimination and bias against communities of color and other disadvantaged groups, and a historic and profoundly damaging trend of criminalizing mental illness. The failure to bring to scale effective prevention, early intervention and treatment programs has left millions of people struggling without the services that could help them. These problems exploded during the pandemic, with dramatic impact on the most vulnerable groups. It is the mission of MindSite News, a nonprofit digital publication that launched in late 2021, to cover this terrain and amplify awareness of these issues by the public and policymakers. As the only news site dedicated exclusively to reporting on mental health, we focus our work in two vital areas: 1) Investigating and exposing the failings and flaws of our fractured mental health system. 2) Bringing to light innovative solutions that have the potential to address these issues and bring effective programs and policies to scale. The mental health crisis in the U.S. has been unfolding at a time when newspapers and other media are downsizing, eliminating journalism jobs. MindSite New is helping to fill this void by creating a national vehicle for rigorous, in-depth reporting on mental health, bringing focus, expertise and deep journalistic experience to an area of growing public interest and concern.

“We lost everything, we left barefoot, in our pajamas.” – Maria Suares Many migrants suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression – usually undiagnosed – and it can be nearly impossible for them to get services or treatment for their trauma, says psychologist Kiara álvarez, an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. And some also avoid talking about mental health issues because of shame, stigma or cultural barriers. Still, she said, trauma has a way of rising to the surface. “They start having bad dreams. They start having bad sleep – nightmares, stomach aches, feelings of being nervous,” álvarez explained. Silent Battles is a new reporting project focusing on the mental health of immigrant, refugee and asylum communities in the U.S. We begin in Chicago, a city founded by a Haitian immigrant that has the fourth-largest immigrant population in the country. The series is a collaboration between the Chicago bureau of MindSite News and palabra. by NAHJ, a multimedia platform from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. It is made possible with funding from the The Field Foundation of Illinois. https://buff.ly/4dNz8vV?

Charitable giving to mental health is growing faster than the rate of inflation, but still lags far behind the need. And despite the clear importance, the dollars donated to mental health organizations still make up only about 1.7% of philanthropic giving to all causes and less than 6% of donations to health. These are some of the findings of a new report from Mindful Philanthropy. Check out our interview with Kristen Ward, one of Mindful Philanthropy's co-founders to learn more. https://lnkd.in/gsSBipiy

For decades, as news of deaths and mistreatment in the so-called troubled teen industry cropped up in the headlines or evening news, the voices of the young people held in these facilities were heard only as victims – or when they grew older, as grownups struggling to expose abusive facilities. Today, far more survivors are now adults, and they are spearheading a movement to reform the industry – co-led by one former resident in particular: Paris Hilton.
