Minds Matter of Seattle is 99% volunteer-run. Virtually all of our donated funds go straight to funding our mentees high school journey. Minds Matter connects driven and determined students from low-income families with the people, preparation and possibilities to succeed in college, create their future and change the world. Each mentee is paired with two dedicated, college-educated mentors who provide personalized, ongoing support over the course of three years, starting the mentee’s sophomore year. Every non-holiday Saturday during the school year, mentees attend four-hour sessions. In the mornings, test prep, writing and critical thinking, and math instructors guide them through our Test Prep, Writing & Critical Thinking, and Math Matters programs. In the afternoons, the mentors arrive for two hours of mentoring, bonding, “what’s going on in the world” discussions, the “great debate” series, planning of classes and extracurricular activities, summer program and financial aid applications, college preparation, and other enrichment, college readiness, and mentoring activities. Over the summers, mentees attend academic, cultural, or leadership programs throughout the United States and the world, all funded by Minds Matter.

Our Executive Director, Victor Zamora, was featured on King 5 News, sharing his expertise on Washington’s groundbreaking move to guarantee free in-state tuition for low-income students starting in 2026. Victor highlighted the challenges of the FAFSA process, calling it “a nightmare” for many students and families. He emphasized how this new program will shift the focus from financial barriers to opportunities, aligning closely with our mission at Minds Matter Seattle. We're thrilled to welcome the newest members of the MMSEA Board! We'll spotlight them throughout the next couple of weeks. Let me introduce you to Nidhi, Daniel, and Thanh! Nidhi is a Product Manager at Amazon. She joined Minds Matter because she is passionate about building community and opportunity through education. Daniel is the CEO and Principal Consultant for Pulse Group Consulting, as well as CFO for Washington Maritime Blue. He was previously a volunteer staff member on the fundraising team at Minds Matter Seattle, and is passionate about increasing access to education and opportunity. Thanh is a Software Engineer at Microsoft. She is part of the Minds Matter Seattle inaugural class of 2016 and is passionate about community building and expanding access to higher education for low-income students. Their combined skills, expertise, and commitment to excellence will strengthen MMSEA, and we know they will make an incredible impact.
