This Volunteer Appreciation Week, we are delighted to feature Gemma, whose vibrant spirit and dedication to mentoring at Minds Matter Portland truly embody the spirit of community engagement. Gemma, a proud alumna of James Madison University, carries forward her alma mater's ethos of community service, enriching her life and the lives of those around her. Drawn to our mission by her enduring passion for community service, Gemma initially explored tutoring to engage with high school math and writing. Her journey took a meaningful turn following an enlightening interview with Susanne, a seasoned volunteer at Minds Matter. Inspired by Susanne's enduring connections with her mentees, Gemma embraced the challenge of mentoring, a role that has since become a highlight of her weekends. For Gemma, mentoring Maya and Jocelyn—two bright and engaged teenagers—has been incredibly rewarding. Starting mid-year could have been challenging, but the warm welcome and the chance to dive into their lives, from sports to academic achievements, has been particularly fulfilling. Gemma values every Saturday conversation, where she not only catches up on their lives but also reinforces her commitment to support them unconditionally. Gemma and her co-mentor Aaron excel in nurturing their mentees' self-esteem. By openly sharing their learning curves, they demystify the process of mastering new skills, encouraging Maya and Jocelyn to recognize and celebrate their unique strengths. Their mentorship is crafted to boost the girls' confidence, helping them understand their potential and the impact they are poised to make on the world. Gemma considers her success in these interactions, leaving Maya and Jocelyn feeling empowered and optimistic about their futures, as the true measure of a day well spent. Thank you, Gemma, for your inspiring dedication and for making every mentoring session a stepping stone toward greater confidence and success for your mentees. Your impact is profound and lasting.
