This Women’s History Month, we recognize the women who have shaped history through leadership, resilience, and a commitment to progress. One such leader is Candace Lightner, the founder of MADD and We Save Lives. After losing her daughter to a drunk driver, she turned her grief into action, creating one of the most influential grassroots organizations in history. She is credited with saving more than 400,000 lives by driving policy changes, raising awareness, and advocating for safer roads. At Mindr, we believe in the power of individuals to create change, just as Lightner did. Last week, I had the pleasure of representing MADD and speaking on a panel called, “Working Together to Save Lives” alongside Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris, Alden Schacher (Diageo), and Karen Sisson, Esq. (Mindr), which was moderated by Michele Leonhart (DEA Education Foundation) and hosted by the Attorney General Alliance. My fellow panelists and I spoke about our mission to end impaired driving through public education, implementation of the HALT Act (law requiring all new cars to have passive impairment detection tech as a safety feature), and ignition interlock and other legislations to drive change in behaviors. While our topic was serious, we still managed to have fun. Because this was AGA’s Women’s Empowerment Summit, the room was completely filled with powerful and accomplished women. We shared about what drives and fuels each of us and celebrated and lifted each other up. The event was so gorgeous and elegant that I ended up staying for the gala at night. We applaud the introduction of AB 366 in California, a pivotal piece of legislation requiring Ignition Interlock Devices (IIDs) for anyone convicted of a DUI offense, not just repeat offenders.?Over the past 5 years, California has seen more than a 50% increase in drunk driving fatalities and 8 out of the 10 worst cities for DUI are in the state. IIDs are a critical and proven prevention tool to combat the growing epidemic of drunk driving. In 2023 alone, IIDs stopped more than 30,500 attempts to drive drunk. Data shows states that fully maximize IID usage have seen 26% fewer fatal crashes compared to others. California can set a powerful example by adopting this life-saving measure – and join 35 states already making a difference. ? Every 39 minutes, someone dies in a DUI-related crash in the United States.? ? An average drunk driver has driven drunk more 80 times before their first arrest. ? Per the CA DMV, IIDs reduce repeat DUI offenses by 74% when installed. The time for California to act is now with the passage of AB 366.
