Developing a resilient, carbon-friendly, and responsive heat pump system using solid-state technology.

关于我们

We are solving the problem of reducing the carbon emissions associated with heating and cooling. Heat pumps are the cornerstone to have more sustainable heating and cooling. But refrigerant leaks during operation and failure of conventional compressor-based technologies disproportionally contribute to GHG emissions. Transitioning to a refrigerant-free society is the most impactful single action to reduce emissions and an opportunity to move beyond mechanical systems, which are prone to wear and noise. At MIMiC, we are developing a resilient, cost-effective, and carbon-friendly heat pump using solid-state technology.

What’s the coolest technology around? We may have the answer. ?? As the world warms, finding innovative solutions to balance comfort with emissions reduction has never been more urgent. Enter solid-state cooling — a new class of technology that: ?? Eliminates harmful refrigerants ? Boosts energy efficiency ? Offers benefits like precise temperature control and fewer moving parts This exciting approach relies on the caloric effect, where a solid material can change temperature by applying an external force or field like magnets, stretching, voltage, or pressure. mimic systems and MAGNOTHERM are two Third Derivative portfolio companies making strides in this space. ?? Check out a new article, co-authored by RMI's Yulin Lou and Third Derivative’s very own Lindsay Rasmussen, to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gx2A5eUP Thank you to Blue Haven Initiative for funding this research. #ClimateInnovation #SolidStateCooling #Entrepreneurship #Technology

Yesterday’s Pitchfest at the Housing Innovation Summit showcased an impressive array of companies competing live and all vying to revolutionize the housing industry with some big, bold ideas. We’d like to congratulate this year’s winners! ? Judge's Selection: mimic systems (who are developing a heat pump for heating and cooling using solid-state technology?reducing the maintenance associated with traditional systems, and overall reduces carbon emissions because it is refrigerant free). ? Audience Favorite: RainStick a design-forward and cost-competitive solution that addresses sustainability problems by requiring 80% less water and up to 80% less energy per showering experience. And big kudos to all who participated! Thanks goes to our judges and Summit attendees + our event partner Home Technology Ventures led by Christopher Langford.? Feeling so inspired by the startups and community who came to our 2nd NYC Climate Tech Demo night! Standing room only to see 5 of the most innovative startups in the ecosystem. From diamonds made from captured carbon, to solid-state heat pumps, carbon tracking in the buildings supply chain, indoor carbon capture, and ultra-intelligent wildfire management- it was so much fun seeing your innovation live on stage. Probably the first time I've been to an event where diamonds were casually passed around in the audience! ???Aether: Sequestering carbon into diamonds ???mimic systems: Reducing building energy use through solid-state heat pumps ????Pathways: Reducing emissions from new building materials ????Thalo Labs: Decarbonizing buildings by capturing GHG in real time ???Vibrant Planet: Responding to wildfire and climate risks in real time Great job Ryan Shearman, Berardo Matalucci, Leise Sandeman, London Clark, Zander Bonorris, on the demos! Thank you to my friends Laura Fox and Sonam Velani at Streetlife Ventures, Craig Wilson and Evan Korth at NYU Tandon Future Labs and IndieBio (SOSV) for co-hosting! Can't wait for the next NYC Climate Tech Demo Night! Please send over nominations for Climate Tech startups to present.

Manager & Building Sector Lead for RMI's Third Derivative program working to decarbonize the global built environment.

Building sector startup spotlight -- Day 6 -- featuring mimic systems ?? MIMiC has developed a solid-state heat pump for room air conditioning and heating that uses zero refrigerants (which disproportionately contribute to GHG emissions when leaks occur during operation or end of life disposal). Cooling in general is a huge challenge – air conditioning and electric fans consume 20% of the electricity used in buildings globally, and this is expected to grow 3x by 2050. While heat pumps are a cornerstone of more sustainable electrification of heating and cooling, their refrigerant use is still problematic. MIMiC is well positioned to further transition heat pumps and heating and cooling to be refrigerant-free. Learn more about MIMiC: ? https://lnkd.in/ez2bqyZe? Berardo Matalucci, Theodorian Borca-Tasciuc Interested in being a part of Third Derivative’s accelerator program? Applications are open for our next general cohort and will now be open until April 2nd (next Tuesday!!). Learn more and apply: ?? https://lnkd.in/erTeARqT? ? What's this building sector startup spotlight? As D3’s Building Sector Lead, I wanted to welcome our 24-1 cohort startups, and give an extra spotlight to our new building sector companies for my network and professional friends here in the architecture, engineering, and construction world. My goal is simply to bring leading decarbonization innovations to the AEC community to spark inspiration and collaboration. We have seven building sector (and adjacent) companies in our 24-1 cohort, and I plan to highlight one a day. I hope you follow along! #RMI #ClimateTech #ClimateSolutions #Startups #Entrepreneur #AEC #Design #DesignInnovation?RMI RMI Carbon-Free Buildings
