On March 2, 1955, 15-year-old Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat on a segregated Montgomery bus (nine days before Rosa Parks). The 15-year-old was among the five women originally included in the federal court case challenging Montgomery’s bus segregation law. On December 17, 1956, the Supreme Court determined that bus segregation in Alabama was unconstitutional. #HonoringClaudette #WomensHistoryMonth

While driving the RedLine, MCTS driver Dominic T. had an unexpected passenger board his bus: a lost & confused 9-year-old boy just trying to get home. This is one of many lost children who got home safely thanks to MCTS drivers. #MCTSExcellence!

When bad weather hits Milwaukee, MCTS drivers step up and help those in need. This story of #MCTSExcellence highlights Sharon M., who went above and beyond to help shovel a bus stop for a rider in a mobility device.

Today we had the honor of recognizing a true trailblazer in Milwaukee’s transit history. In celebration of Black History Month, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley and MCTS presented a proclamation in honor of Jack Patterson, the first African American bus operator in Milwaukee, hired in 1945 by Wisconsin Electric Railway and Transport Company (now known as MCTS). Mr. Patterson paved the way for generations of Black transit professionals, breaking barriers at a time when opportunities were limited. His contributions remind us of this year’s Black History Month theme: African Americans and the Labor Movement. We were proud to present this proclamation to Mr. Patterson’s great-niece, Loreal, as we continue to honor his legacy and the path he created for so many.
