Exciting progress at #Stemmatters! Last week, our team successfully completed the first large-scale isolation of primary NK cells using the CliniMACS Prodigy?. Starting with fresh leukapheresis material, the quality control results confirmed over 95% purity of the isolated NK cells (CD3-/CD56+). ?? A huge well done to everyone involved! This achievement marks a key milestone as we move forward to the next challenge: the generation of CAR-NK cells for advanced immunotherapy applications. Understanding the role of immune cells roles in chronic liver disease, in a human setting, is fundamental to developing treatments for chronic and autoimmune liver disease. ?? Focusing on interactions between epithelial and immune cells, Scott Davies and colleagues, as part of Ye Oo’s group from the Centre of Liver and Gastrointestinal Research at the University of Birmingham, specifically studied the internalisation of CD8+ T cells, by biliary epithelial cells in primary biliary cholangitis, a chronic liver disease. The group characterised the mechanism of CD8+ T cell invasion into biliary epithelial cells, resulting in a recent publication in Nature Communications (2024); 15 853. ?? Over sixteen techniques, from cellular to molecular, were used including separating viable cells using Miltenyi Biotec’s cell isolation kits, enabling numerous downstream applications. ?? Thank you to Scott Davies, and his colleagues, for their dedication to improving our understanding, and potentially treatment, of chronic and autoimmune liver disease.
