?? Rethinking Food Fortification: More Than Adding Micronutrients ?? Staple food fortification has incredible potential to fight malnutrition, but let’s be honest—success isn’t just about adding micronutrients to food. It’s about driving behavioral shifts across industries, governments, and consumers. If we really want fortification to succeed, we need to think bigger, act smarter, and embrace a bit of messiness. Here’s what that could look like: 1. Behavior Change, Not Just Awareness Explaining why fortified food matters isn’t enough. People—and systems—are driven by habits, not information alone. ? For the industry: What if fortification wasn’t just a box to tick but became the default? Incentives and nudges could make fortification the obvious choice instead of an optional extra. ? For governments: Policies are great, but enforcement needs to be realistic and rewarding. Let’s design systems that actually help governments follow through. ? For consumers: Forget generic awareness campaigns—what about packaging cues, subsidies, or weaving fortification messages within existing marketing strategy? Behavioral nudges work better than lectures. 2. Data-Driven, But Keep It Real Data is critical, but let’s keep it actionable. Instead of chasing perfection, focus on what’s practical and fast. ? Cost over complexity: Expensive data systems that take years to roll out won’t work. What’s the simplest way to measure and adapt right now? Start there. ? Speed over scale: Small wins lead to bigger wins. Prioritize getting fortified foods into people’s hands quickly, even if it’s not at full scale yet. 3. Collaboration in the Real World Collaboration sounds nice, but it’s messy—and that’s okay. It’s about balancing competing priorities, not expecting perfect harmony. ? Businesses care about profit. That’s fine—how can we align fortification with their goals using subsidies, tax breaks, or shared tools? ? Governments juggle dozens of priorities. Let’s make fortification align with broader goals like economic growth or health savings. ? NGOs and advocates can do more than raise awareness. They can take on operational roles to keep things moving. The Reality Check The truth is, fortification is never going to roll out perfectly. Progress will come from embracing imperfection, finding compromises, and focusing on consistent forward motion—even when it’s messy. Fortification isn’t just a technical solution—it’s a systems shift that needs creativity, grit, and some uncomfortable choices. Let’s share ideas, test approaches, and move the needle together. Abhishek Shukla, India Program Manager, along with dignitaries from Bangladesh, Maldives and Sri Lanka recently addressed the UNICEF gathering on “Nourishing South Asia | Scaling Impact of Large-Scale Food Fortification for Prevention of Micronutrient Deficiencies in Children and Women in #Kathmandu #Nepal. The convening emphasized private sector engagement and national efforts in strengthening enabling environments for Large scale food fortification (#LSFF) Abhishek highlighted TechnoServe's impact in South Asia through technical assistance and partnerships. Key recommendations included policy harmonization, incentives to encourage companies to meet fortification targets without being financially overburdened, collaboration, and capacity building, co-creation of achievable fortification standards, equity and flexibility for smaller enterprises for gradual adoption of fortification practices, and dialogue for sustainable compliance. Two weeks ago, the M4N team proudly featured an article in the Tanzania Nation Daily commemorating Siku ya Lishe Kitaifa (National Day of Nutrition) and the International Day to End Poverty. Although this post comes slightly late, there’s never a delay in recognizing the dedicated millers and partners working tirelessly to improve nutrition across Tanzania. From the opening of Tanzania’s first nutrient premix factory - the SANKU Premix facility- to impactful partnerships with local millers, the M4N team is paving the way for a healthier, well-nourished population.
