Main Electronics Box hosts the electronics for the previously introduced instruments: EFI, MSC and MAG. MEB also contains other components provided by the University of Iowa, such as: Low Voltage Power Supply and Central Data Processing Unit. For today’s TRACERS Tuesday we take a closer look at Magnetic Search Coil, which determines whether the structures and events in this cusp region are tied to the timing of reconnection events or their location, specifically at the distant magnetopause (far away boundary). Understanding this helps scientists better grasp how energy and particles from the Sun interact with Earth’s magnetic field, which has implications for space weather and protecting technology on Earth. Let’s take a closer look at the instruments aboard TRACERS, starting with the Analyzer for Cusp Ions (ACI). ACI plays a critical role in measuring changes in magnetopause reconnection which may determine whether reconnection varies spatially vs. temporally variable.
