We're starting a new series called SET TAlK. While our conversations are broad and oftentimes unfocused, shifting from one topic to another, each "Set Talk" will revolve around a given theme for that video. In this episode we cover lens sets that introduce character, such as vintage lenses like the Zeiss Super Speeds, as well as lenses that produce cleaner results, like the DZO and Sigma zooms and primes. We also discuss framing and how there are emerging styles that should be considered depending on the type of project you're filming. You can clean your lenses with your shirt only for so long. Once you get on larger productions with expensive lenses, you'll want to know how to properly clean your glass. We broke down the most common methods of lens cleaning to protect your glass and keep your images clean. To see the full video, head on over to our Youtube page.

Interview aesthetic comes down to the type of piece you're creating. "Standard" framing may have the subject either left or right of center frame, with the subject's eyes placed at the horizontal third of the frame. However, there are unconventional framing options as well. It might mean using a wider or tighter lens than usual, adding more head room, or framing a subject in a way that eliminates breathing room. While there's no "correct" way to frame a subject, you can draw inspiration from the type of piece you're creating and consider how the final edit will unfold. This will help inform decisions on where cameras should be placed, how they should move, what lenses to pick, and how to set up your lights.

There are a lot of reasons to choose one lens set over another. If you're a solo operator on a tighter schedule, it may be difficult to use a set of prime lenses, despite their quality improvements over zooms. Lenses with in-body stabilization offer improvements to handheld footage, which may prove beneficial if you're unable to bring a tripod to a given location, but may lack the image quality necessary for high-fidelity work. There are always tradeoffs to the lens set you choose, so consider the subject matter carefully before deciding. To see the full video, check us out on Youtube at Millbrook Studios!

We rely on cinema lenses for their outstanding image quality and solid build, and yet there are situations where using cinema lenses wouldn't make sense. What are the pros and cons of using cinema lenses, and what should you consider before picking up a pair of your own? Our head cinematographer, Tripp Green, breaks down the thought process of using cinema lenses, the quirks of using them, the crew size required, and the situations where it's best to stay away from them. If you're curious about these longer-form videos, be sure to subscribe. We'll do more gear breakdowns as well as casual discussions on our process as producers, directors, and cinematographers. We were approached by Raleigh Parks to create three new videos for their Greenways ??? The videos needed to work for both social media as well as have permanence on their website. We needed to strike a balance between informational and creative so we relied on interesting camera moves and jump cuts to multiple locations around the greenways. The end result was three videos that teach everyone what they need to know about Greenway safety in under 60 seconds each. We're thrilled with the result and proud of the crew that put this together! A huge shoutout to Doug and Steve of the Bicycle Chain Raleigh for their beautiful bikes. Be sure to reach out to them for any bike needs! . . . . .
