As part of a multi-year initiative to celebrate Longwood Gardens' legendary trees, The Lookout Loft invites visitors of all ages and abilities to engage with nature in a truly immersive way. We were honored to be part of this project. ??Designed in the rustic Adirondack style, The Lookout Loft guides visitors on a sensory experience from forest floor to treetop canopy. A series of ramps and pavilions offer a seamless, inclusive way to explore the landscape. Wood species like northern white cedar, hop hornbeam, spruce, and ipe were carefully selected for their inherent durability, workability. and beauty Interpretive signage deepens the experience, offering insight into the surrounding trees and their unique characteristics. At Millan Architects, we see architecture as a way to bridge people and nature. To us, the Lookout Loft is an invitation to explore, learn, and connect with the natural world in a way that's accessible to all. Show us your photos of this Longwood Gardens staple! #AccessibleDesign #NatureInspired #TreehouseArchitecture #SustainableCraftsmanship #LongwoodGardens #ExperientialDesign

  • Happy Presidents' Day! Let’s take a moment to admire the architectural legacy of the White House—a global symbol of democracy and one of the most renowned examples of neoclassical architecture in the United States. ?? The Design: The White House was designed by Irish-born architect James Hoban, who drew inspiration from classical antiquity. His neoclassical design reflects the aesthetic principles of order, proportion, and scale found in ancient Greek and Roman architecture. With its grand columns, symmetrical geometric forms, and refined ornamental details, the White House is a textbook example of neoclassicism architecture in early America. ?? The History: In 1792, President George Washington and Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson launched a national competition to determine the design of the executive mansion. Hoban’s vision was chosen from the submissions, and the structure we know today was brought to life. Although French architect Pierre Charles L’Enfant had proposed a much larger design, Hoban's more modest yet elegant approach became a defining part of America’s architectural identity. This Presidents Day, let’s reflect not only on leadership but also on the architectural heritage that frames our nation’s story. #PresidentsDay #ArchitecturalLegacy #MillanArchitects

  • Welcome to the start of Modernism Week. This 11-day festival in Palm Springs, California, celebrates midcentury modern architecture, art, and design. Modern architecture is a craft rooted in the Modernist movement’s drive to challenge convention and rethink how we design. It’s all about functionalism—buildings designed to serve their purpose seamlessly. Think open layouts tailored to real use, materials like glass, steel, and concrete that showcase structural integrity, and natural light that transforms spaces. One of the most exciting aspects of modern architecture is its approach to material and space. Glass becomes a tool for connecting interiors to the outside world. Concrete and steel are celebrated for their strength and versatility. And let’s not forget the layouts. Architecture and design tell a story about people. A focus on open spaces as opposed to closed-off and contained rooms reflected a shift in how people wanted to live, move, and interact with their surroundings in the middle of the 20th century. #ModernismWeek #MidcenturyModern #ModernArchitecture #CraftOfDesign #ArchitecturalGeekery #DesignAndFunction
