Focusing on "sick" care alone is not sustainable. A shift toward prevention-first health care is imperative. Non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes account for most premature deaths, fueled by limited access to healthy foods, inactivity, and inadequate screening. Socioeconomic disparities limit access to preventive services. However, early detection and community-based interventions can reduce morbidity, mortality, and costs. Preventive health will flourish when communities are empowered. Community partnership approaches to designing and delivering preventive services are becoming increasingly significant in the US healthcare landscape. The federal cutbacks and hiring freezes announced in January and February of this year will have a strong effect on veterans’ employment. Estimates largely project veterans to make up nearly 30% of the federal workforce, with as many as half of those workers being disabled. The Milken Institute's Veterans' Economic Mobility Initiative's full and clear intent is to address the challenges of veteran underemployment and military spouse unemployment. These developments highlight significant challenges we have already seen facing the veterans’ workforce, as well as emphasizing the significant role the private sector should play in addressing the economic needs of veterans, military spouses, and the very issues of the military transition itself.
