On March 9, 1847, the Siege of Veracruz began during the Mexican-American War as U.S. forces, led by General Winfield Scott, launched the first large-scale amphibious assault in American military history. Over 12,000 troops landed on the beaches near Veracruz, surrounding the city in a 20-day siege that ultimately led to its surrender on March 29, 1847. This decisive victory allowed U.S. forces to advance inland, paving the way for the eventual capture of Mexico City.
