Women's History Month - Chief Nurse Beatrice Mary MacDonald First Female Purple Heart and Distinguished Service Cross Recipient (September 27, 1881 – September 4, 1969) She was assigned to a British Clearing Hospital in Belgium during the First World War. In 1917, she lost her right eye when German aircraft bombed her hospital during Third Battle of Ypres in western Belgium. She received the Purple Heart for her wounds on January 4, 1936, retroactively making her the first woman to earn the award. Additionally, she received the Distinguished Service Cross, America’s second highest medal for valor.

MEET THE VOLUNTEER of the WEEK at the MILITARY HERITAGE MUSEUM Thank you to Mike Cornelius who has volunteered year around in the Museum Galleries for 14 years. He enjoys volunteering as he is able to share his military experiences as a US Marine with other Veterans and Museum visitors. Originally from Pennsylvania, after his military service he worked in a furniture factory. Currently, he lives in Port Charlotte. The Military Heritage Museum display hundreds of historical aritifacts. Among them, you will find the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress Model. The B-17 was a heavy bomber introduced in 1938 and was used by the US Army Air Force during WWII. Primarily used in the European Theater, the B-17 dropped more bombs than any other aircraft in WWII.

Meet Bob Richardson, this week’s highlighted volunteer!?Bob is a docent in the Military Heritage Museum Galleries.?He has been a volunteer at the Museum for twelve years.?He likes being involved in a regulated society to benefit people and to share some of his experiences; he loves to tell his story.?He served in the U.S. Navy. As an electrical engineer, he then worked on U.S. Naval projects helping to design and build the 1st?of five guidance computers for the Polaris missiles.
