This month, we spotlight Billie Watson, a former elementary and middle school teacher turned esthetician, who founded The Cheeky Peach Wax Studio & Esthetics, a full-service wax and esthetics studio in Granbury, Texas. After leaving teaching in May 2023, Billie Watson pursued her passion and went to esthetics school. She told us, “[Becoming an esthetician is] just something I’ve been interested in for a while, and the stars aligned.” Upon graduation, she became a Brazilian waxer at a local salon. Unfortunately, the business closed towards the end of 2023. Finally living her dream, she wasn’t going to let it slip away that easily, so she decided to open her own place, and held her grand opening a month after her old place of employment closed. Wanting to set herself apart from other businesses in the area, Billie stated, “I’ve worked really hard to make this place a pretty comfortable, relaxed environment. I strive to help clients have the most pleasant experience possible while they are at my salon.” She also wants to stay open later so clients don’t have to feel pressure to squeeze in their appointments during working hours, “I mean, a lot of spas are only open during business hours when people work. As a person who worked a normal business hour job for years, it sucks whenever you're off and now everything's closed.”? Taking the leap from teacher to esthetician and now business owner is no small feat. Billie shared, “I've never been a business owner. This is something I've always wanted to do, but was scared, so I'm excited to see how the fruits of my labor pay off. As a teacher, it doesn't matter how hard you work, you get paid the same, so I'm excited to see what I can accomplish by just putting forth all my effort.”? This month, we highlight sisters Carla Nelson and Wendy Jules, registered nurses who founded Fleur De Lis Beauty & Esthetics, a luxury health and wellness spa in their hometown of Flatbush, Brooklyn, focused on skin of color. The sisters were motivated to become entrepreneurs when they noticed a lack of diversity for skincare in their community. One dermatologist even prompted Wendy to lie to a patient of color about their condition, Wendy expressed, “That really made me sad that the doctor wanted me to be dishonest with the patient, who really was just looking for help... so that always stuck with me and I said no matter what I do, we will be the most integritous and help our people.” Their spa offers numerous services including facials, microneedling, laser hair removal, consultations for skin and gut health, and much more.? After working in dermatology and plastic surgery, Carla got her esthetics license and strived to educate the masses. She stated, “It’s important to teach children about skincare, it’s the largest organ in our bodies. So, I want to spread positive information and help educate everyone about skin health. Skin health is health in general.” Unfortunately, as the sisters were starting to expand their business, the pandemic struck. Throughout the shutdown, they worked as essential workers until finally being able to reopen. Since then, they’ve serviced 3,000 clients, most of whom are loyal regulars. Carla shared, “We're sisters, and we foster that sisterhood with our clients as well. It’s a vibe, it’s a connection.” We are so proud of Carla and Wendy for being the change they wanted to see in their community and turning their passion into a thriving career. This month, we spotlight Josh Newman, a barber from Rhinelander, Wisconsin, who defied the odds and transformed his life from continuing down a dark path to inspiring others. Growing up as a troubled kid, Josh found himself in and out of the system for ~8 years. However, during his time in prison, Josh found solace and inspiration in an unexpected place. Befriending the prison barber, he learned the art and techniques of barbering and discovered a talent that ignited his passion. Upon his release, Josh faced the daunting task of reintegrating into society. Regardless of the road ahead, Josh was determined to pursue barbering as his new path and remained unwavering. He sought out structure and an opportunity to learn and grow, so he enrolled in Nicolet College's Cosmetology program. He expressed, “I went in pretty blind to be honest with you, even when I went to the interview with the teacher I felt pretty out of place. I was just out of prison, I’m a big guy with a big beard, just kind of looking out of place. But everyone was very welcoming, and I was very transparent about my story right away, where I came from, what I did, and who I wanted to be, and they were like ‘let’s do it’." After graduating cosmetology school, Josh got a full-time position at Fantastic Sams, and through his hard work and dedication to his craft, he built strong relationships that have opened even more doors for him. He has established a connection with the jail administrator for Vilas Country which allows him to share his story with inmates in their recovery program. He also commits to building his own business Cutz With Connection, where he visits institutions, jails, and schools, tells his story, and offers his services to those in need. Josh stated, "I’m fortunate that with my career and my story, I’ve been able to open more and more doors for my future. I get to be exactly who I am every day. I don’t have to hide from anybody or hide from myself. I’m making a whole career and an entire life for me and my family based on my past, present, and future."?
