American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) is developing a new Climate and Biodiversity Action Plan for 2026-2030. José de Jesús Leal, ASLA, MIG Principal and Native Nation Building Studio Director, is part of the 33-member Advisory Group leading this effort along with the five-member Task Force. "Landscape architects know that nature-based solutions can help address both the climate and biodiversity crises while also providing multiple economic, environmental, social, and health benefits. This incredible Task Force and Advisory Group, made up of biodiversity, climate, equity, and advocacy leaders, will show us the way and guide our collective action over the next five years,” said ASLA President Kona Gray, FASLA. “Wow! You and your team have exceeded our wildest dreams! The site looks amazing.” The kind words from Ben Hackett, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Hemisfair Conservancy, are in response to MIG’s work on the Hemisfair Park web app. MIG originally created the web app so individuals can pay tribute to, and honor loved ones, companies, and organizations via tree donor and tribute recognition using accessible AR and multimedia. Now, the app has been enhanced to include wayfinding information about places to eat, live, relax, and play throughout this marquee downtown park. Check it out for yourself at https://hemisfair.app/

At the end of last year, Los Angeles County Public Works hosted an enterprise-wide Equity Forum to introduce their groundbreaking Equity Framework, outlining how the department plans to prioritize equity in all its programs and services to build a safer and more resilient Los Angeles County over the next five years. In addition to being in-person, the Forum was also streamed online so all employees could celebrate reaching this milestone and learn about next steps for implementation. As strategic partners of the Equity Framework, MIG was thrilled to celebrate this step with Los Angeles County Public Works and Pivotal Strategies, and look forward to continuing this important work!

Waterfronts are wonderful places for people to gather and create community. Unfortunately, many of our countries waterfronts are cut off from our communities by highways and railroads. Harsh winters and large storm events can stack the deck further against reclaiming these types of waterfronts. One area that is no stranger to big infrastructure and extreme weather is Buffalo, NY. MIG had the pleasure of being the lead consultant working with the Buffalo Urban Development Corporation (BUDC) and the City of Buffalo to develop the Downtown Waterfront Improvements Plan (DWIP). By leveraging recent successes, getting creative with infrastructure barriers, embracing history, and authentically engaging stakeholders, the DWIP maps out how a renewed district with equitable development and a vibrant public realm can be connected to the lakeside neighborhoods and the rest of Downtown, a waterfront which will support the continued renaissance and resiliency of Buffalo. Last year, MIG's Carolyn M. Verheyen, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, and Kate Welty, MIG Principal and Director of Management and Policy Planning Services, met with Los Angeles County Public Works staff to facilitate an Equity Ambassadors training as part of their ongoing work on the Los Angeles County Equity in Infrastructure initiative. A cohort of 50 ambassadors from Public Works participated in the four-hour training to better understand the draft Equity Framework and their role to promote and support it across the organization. The draft Equity Framework is a five-year plan to reduce inequities in how the Public Works department makes infrastructure investments and delivers services, with the goal of infusing equity into everything they do. During the training, the group collaborated on ways they could foster conversations about equity and explore how to promote it. We are excited to see this project evolve in the years to come!

MIG is excited to collaborate with the City of Laguna Niguel on the Open Space Inventory Project, a detailed initiative to catalog and categorize parks and natural areas. This technical effort will offer valuable insights to guide restoration, wildfire mitigation, and ongoing management while also educating the community about the city’s unique open spaces and the access they provide, fostering greater awareness and appreciation. Through a dynamic team of open space planners, natural resource experts, GIS specialists, and creative designers, MIG aims to deliver a visually engaging inventory that sparks public dialogue, deepens understanding, and inspires pride in the natural assets that define Laguna Niguel.
