We celebrated World Wetlands Day earlier this month, so in honor of this international recognition, I invite you to learn more about wetlands and read a pledge to mark the day. Wetlands are crucial ecosystems where water influences the environment. They support rich ecosystems and include many types of inland, coastal, and human-made areas. They provide environmental, social, and economic benefits, contributing to flood control, water purification, biodiversity, and livelihoods for over a billion people globally. Despite covering only 6% of Earth's land surface, wetlands host 40% of all species and play a crucial role in human well-being and climate regulation! However, wetlands face rapid decline due to human activities and climate change, disappearing three times faster than forests, making it imperative to shift perceptions and prioritize their protection for the future. That's why this is my pledge: ?? "I pledge to actively participate in the conservation and restoration of wetland ecosystems to ensure that they regain and maintain their ecological character. And I will engage other stakeholders to do the same." When you hear the words “wetland restoration,” do you think of a very large-scale project? They can be, but that isn’t always the case! While some of our clients need large-scale restoration, others are looking at smaller scale "pockets" or constructed wetlands for stormwater management - in their backyards or even City parks. No matter the size of the project, every little bit of restoration work helps restore and preserve vital ecosystems. We help our clients see our vision for projects by rendering our concepts like this example of a stormwater treatment demonstration in a new pocket park we prepared for the City of New London, MN and Middle Fork Crow River Watershed District. Get in touch with us, today, to discuss your project: https://lnkd.in/gkNkkuvx #midwestwetlandimprovements #streamecology #wetlands #wetlandrestoration #environmentalprotection #habitaterestoration #waterquality

Good news! State and federal funding is available for wetland restoration projects. Bad news! It can be difficult to understand what applies to your project. Are you interested in learning more about how climate change is affecting our nation's wetlands? The @U.S. Geological Survey is currently conducting blue carbon research in Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, Florida, Louisiana, California, and Washington to learn more about how carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions are affecting our important wetland ecosystems. We know several non profits and private investors are considering the future of carbon credit trading, which is very similar to wetland and stream mitigation banking and may add another layer of financial incentives to your restoration project. Read more about these studies and the interesting things they’re uncovering: https://lnkd.in/gnJU_3zs

Even though it takes man-made interventions to overcome man-made ecological damage, our friends in the animal kingdom can often step up and help us restore an ecosystem. In this case... beavers to the rescue! A highly effective stream restoration- and flood-controlling technique is copycatting the talents of beavers by building artifical dams--called beaver dam analogs in the industry. Beavers can play a big role in maintaining wetlands (helping a variety of species) according to the National Audubon Society . ?? Beaver dams can: ? trap sediment ? create wetlands ? slow runoff ? mitigate impacts of floods ?extend seasonal streamflow ? raise downcut streambeds, often reconnecting them with their floodplains ? increase vegetation ? create or increase habitat for diverse wildlife species, including amphibians, fish, small mammals, and birds. You can't walk away from restoration projects when you’re finished. Much like the environment around them, they're continually evolving and require long-term monitoring and management. In this blog, we’ll explain why long-term monitoring matters and can actually be required if you use certain financing options to fund your project. Or if you are looking to gain financial rewards from your project. https://lnkd.in/gWQ5BbPF #midwestwetlandimprovements #streamecology #wetlands #wetlandrestoration #environmentalprotection #habitaterestoration #waterquality

We recently started working in a timber rattlesnake habitat in the driftless region of Southeastern Minnesota. While we aren't big on snakes, we respect the role all creatures play in the ecosystem and were happy to learn how to work around them so we didn't disturb them too much. We really enjoyed learning more about this interesting species and its habitat. Plus, did you know timber rattlesnakes can live for 20+ years in the wild and even longer in captivity? Unfortunately for the species, its low reproduction rate and high juvenile mortality led to its inclusion on the State of Minnesota threatened species list in 1996. Learn more about Minnesota's conservation efforts on behalf of this snake (hint: it involves plenty of land restoration): https://lnkd.in/g4bxVFGp Photo credit: Minnesota DNR #midwestwetlandimprovements #streamecology #wetlands #wetlandrestoration #environmentalprotection #habitaterestoration #waterquality
