Emergency main bushing replacement for a 6000 ton forging press. Removing the existing bronze, turning the carrier for cleanup and turning the new bronze for installation.

This eccentric shaft from a 2500-ton forging press had suffered a catastrophic failure.?The driving end was completely shattered but the rest of the shaft was in good shape.?MPA cut off the shaft at the larger main diameter and welded on a new, stepped forging with 100% penetration.?The remaining diameter was pad welded and the shaft was then turned back to the required size.??This type of repair has been performed in our industry for nearly 80 years with great success and can be done much quicker and cheaper than replacing the shaft.?Proven procedures, proper pre/post heat and weld material selection is critical to creating a lasting repair.?Weld repair isn’t always a viable option and each case is unique.?Feel free to reach out to us for assistance and repair options.

While performing a press inspection, our team discovered severe cracks in the main bushing housings of this 1000-ton press.?MPA developed a plan for action while our customer prepared for the outage required to make the repairs.?The crown was removed, transported to our Lansing facility, stripped then welded to repair all fractures.?Areas susceptible to damage were then reinforced and stiffened.?The 120,000 lb. crown was then thermal stress relieved on our floor.?We then line bored and skin cut all surfaces necessary to maintain original specifications.?All new bronze bushings were made and fitted to the crankshaft.?Counterbalances and driveshaft were rebuilt while the crown was down.??Additional work included welding and machining of the slide (showcased in a previous post.)?The slide was an unplanned repair, but also one that was performed without adding to the original timeline of 10 weeks.?Our welding team worked tirelessly around the clock to pull that one off!? Fractured press crowns and beds are becoming more frequent as stampers push older machines to their limits.?Fortunately, MPA has the knowledge and resources necessary?to breathe new life into these presses and provide many more years of service.

Here are the drive & intermediate shafts for this 1000-ton press.?The hydraulic clutch was rebuilt, all shaft bearings replaced and worn bearing seats repaired.?The intermediate pinion showed inconsistent wear that suggested shaft flex under load.?We added an additional bearing between the flywheel & pinion to better support the shaft.?This shaft was also manufactured new, to utilize locking devices on the pinion & pulley.??This has become a popular upgrade for us to perform and has given our customers excellent results.?Both shafts were fitted to the crown to ensure backlash is to spec and to ensure no issues at assembly in the customer’s plant.

This 1000-ton, 216” x 78” slide was being disassembled for connecting rod saddle replacement.?While doing so, our technicians discovered severe fractures below both nut seats.?Fortunately, our team had just pulled the crown from the machine, so it didn’t require much more time to remove the slide and send it to our shop in Lansing.?We added fillet welds in hard to get to areas due to space constraints & accessibility.?Our welding team repaired all fractures then cut access windows to access & fully weld and strengthen the vertical walls beneath nut seats.?All access ports were then replaced and welded 100%.??A furnace was built, and the slide was thermally stress relieved in house.?The slide was then requalified on our floor mill before rebuilding the lower connections and adjustment housings.?This was all accomplished without any delay to our primary scope of work, the repair of the press crown.?Stay tuned for more on that project!

We are looking for a full-time Industrial Electrician! ? This opportunity will consist of troubleshooting, repairing, and installing new/used equipment at our customer’s facilities throughout the United States and Mexico. Previous experience with PLC, HMI’s and Wintriss components is required. ? Position Responsibilities: Layout, assemble and wire a control panel complete Layout and bend conduit in consistent straight and contour lines Completely wire a new press rebuild from scratch Understand and wire VFD drives and motors Understand the operations of a stamping press and its ancillary equipment Troubleshot a stamping press and its ancillary equipment Perform Inspections of metal forming and related equipment (mostly presses). Disassemble equipment and check for damage and excessive wear. Document findings and review with MPA supervision or engineering. Clean, deburr, and prepare components for assembly. Fit and assemble components using best industry standards and procedures. Positively represent MPA both in plant and at customer facility. Always follow safety protocol. Respect and adhere to customer safety protocol at their facility, as it may differ from those used at the MPA facility. Maintain good housekeeping practices in the work area both in plant and at customer facility. Be a courteous driver and obey traffic laws while driving to and from customer facility. You are still a representative of MPA.
