After eighteen years in counterterrorism and criminal investigations, you’d think the job would start to feel routine. That maybe, after so many cases, so many arrests, so many long nights spent chasing down leads, the thrill of bringing criminals to justice might start to fade. But it never does. Because the truth is, when you’re part of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) every day is a fight for something bigger than yourself. Every case is a new puzzle, a new challenge; one that could mean the difference between safety and chaos, life and death, justice and lawlessness. When you see firsthand how your work makes a real difference in the lives of everyday Americans, it’s impossible to ever grow numb to the mission. Take the recent federal indictment of 14 individuals in Indianapolis. This wasn’t just a drug bust, it was a surgical strike against a violent criminal organization that had been poisoning communities with meth, fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine. These were hardened criminals who used murder, kidnapping, and intimidation to control their empire. One of them is even accused of shooting a man over a $40 debt. This was a network built on fear and bloodshed, and it was our job to take it down. The success of this operation is a testament to the power of teamwork between the FBI and our dedicated local, state and federal law enforcement partners: (U.S. Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), Fishers Police Department, Indiana Department of Homeland Security, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office & the Indiana Capitol Police Department). In 2024, the Regional Information Sharing Systems, RISS, Program had its 50th birthday! The operation of a regional information sharing center was first supported by U.S. Department of Justice grant funding in 1974. The concept grew as more law enforcement agencies expressed a need to expand the range of intelligence across jurisdictional boundaries. The RISS Program is now administered by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance. The RISS Program and its centers developed over the program’s first ten years. The Regional Organized Crime Information Center (ROCIC) was established in 1973 as the program’s first center. The Rocky Mountain Information Network (RMIN) was established in 1977, and the New England State Police Information Network (NESPIN) was established in 1979. In 1980, the Western States Information Network (WSIN) and the Mid-States Organized Crime Information Center (MOCIC) were established, followed by the Middle Atlantic Great Lakes Organized Crime Law Enforcement (MAGLOCLEN) Network in 1981. The RISS Program and its centers continue to provide information sharing, analysis, and a communication network to support investigative and prosecutorial efforts of member agencies, including local, state, federal, and tribal law enforcement departments. This is outstanding work by the County of Macomb Enforcement Team (COMET). COMET is a mult-jurisdictional drug task force supported by the Michigan High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) program and the following organizations: St. Clair Shores PD, Shelby Township PD, Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, Chesterfield Township PD, Roseville PD, Michigan State Police, ATF, FBI, US Border Patrol, and the Michigan National Guard Counterdrug Program. The Michigan HIDTA is an Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) sponsored counterdrug program that coordinates and provides funding resources to multi-agency drug enforcement task forces to disrupt, dismantle, local, multi-state, and international drug trafficking organizations, money laundering organizations, and the violent crime associated with drug trafficking.
