This month, Berkley is celebrating Women’s History Month, a time to recognize the vital role of women in American history and the contributions of the women in our own workforce today! #WomensHistoryMonth had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” 1987 was the first year that March was designated as “Women’s History Month.” To learn more about the foundations and observation of Women’s History Month in the U.S., visit https://ow.ly/xs2L50V7Wab

  • Dr. Alice Hamilton saved countless workers’ lives as a pioneer in industrial health and safety. Beginning in the 1890s, she treated working-class immigrant patients at Hull House in Chicago. She learned about how diseases, toxic chemicals, and workplace injuries hurt poorer people the most. Dr. Hamilton fought to end these disparities. She investigated companies' safety records and pushed for stronger worker protections. In 1908, the state of Illinois appointed her to its new Occupational Diseases Commission. This was the first government body to investigate employee health and safety. Dr. Hamilton conducted a study of industrial toxins that led to the passage of an influential worker protection law in Illinois. In honor of Women’s History Month, we celebrate the vital role Dr. Alice Hamilton played as a public health pioneer in laying the foundation for the worker health and safety protections we enjoy. https://ow.ly/tZZl50V9nyS #WomensHistoryMonth #CelebratingWomen #WomenOfImpact #SheInspiresMe
