  • The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago - the 2nd best time is today. If you're concerned about your position being remote - start planning now. #remote #hybrid #rto

I've been telling people since 2020 - if you take a remote or hybrid job - it better be in a place you can get to easily or somewhere you're prepared to move to. A lot of people did not take that advice or never thought about it. One woman in particular comes to mind. She took a job based out of California but lived in rural Illinois. California salary for the remote job. It probably made her the highest paid person in her 2,000 person community. She bought a farm. Moved family in with her. And then the California company said we need you in the office 3 days a week. She's two hours from an airport. Would have to rent a hotel in California at least 2 nights a week + flights + other associated travel costs. It didn't work economically so she had to resign. There are no jobs in her community anywhere close to what she was earning and remote job postings are at all time lows. I believe we'll read more about these unfortunate situations in the not too distant future. #remote #returntooffice #hybrid #inoffice

Do you know what my client asked a candidate to put together? Nothing. Do you know what he put together? Among other things - a 25 slide powerpoint explaining his go-to-market strategy. Are you competing against him for a job? I hope not. #interviewing #interview #interviewtips #interviewadvice

There's an amazing poll at the bottom of the post and we'd love for you to rock the vote! I was on a training recently with a bunch of small business leaders and the subject was... Recruiting. And as I was listening I saw all of these preparation tools - make all of these lists - check this off and check that off - ask this question and ask that question. And it got me thinking about trying to evaluate a person in two meetings (sometimes one) to determine if they're a good fit for your organization. It also got me thinking about who in their right mind is answering any of these questions negatively. What happens when your alarm goes off? Um I can barely get out of bed - I trip over the dog - yell at the kids - spill coffee on my shirt and then road rage all the way to the office. I mean people aren't honest in a formal interview - they're trying to be right - because they're trying to get the job. Hiring managers are the same. How's the work life balance? Oh it's great. Misaligned expectations from a candidate or a hiring manager are the number 1 reason hiring is broken. So I wanted to ask you kind folks a question. Do you think companies hire well? If you have a particular story to share - especially if you've experienced a great hiring process - I'd love to hear it in the comments. #vote #polls #marketing #socialmedia #staffingagencies

Do you work hard? Do you think others work harder or less hard than you? I think a lot of people don't know how hard some people are working. I had a person in my personal life one time and she was constantly worried about what everyone else was doing - she was consumed by it - I told her you can be anything you want in your life but you've got to start focusing on where you're spending your time - not where others are. I was talking to a Director of HR recently - she's a client - she's actually in the job market if you're looking to hire someone and I'd highly recommend her but we were having a conversation about our personal lives. I asked her about her husband and what he does and she was telling me a little bit about him - he sounds like an amazing guy and I hope to meet him one day - I probably will at a country music or Jimmy Buffet tribute concert (RIP Jimmy) - but she told me their and his story. Which was this - for the first 10 years of their marriage he'd work his job from 8am-5pm - come home - eat dinner - and go to sleep at 7pm. And then at 10pm his alarm would go off and he'd go to his second job where he'd work 8 hours there. He did this for the first 10 years of their marriage. That second job is now his profession and he's at the top of it or close to it. You know what she did? Supported him. Coached him on areas where he needed to develop. And that inspired me and I wanted to share it with all of you for two reasons: 1. work hard 2. we have an HR leader who is phenomenal if you're hiring for that skillset - and she won't be on the market long #hiring #humanresources #shrm

We are hiring for two critical logistics positions in North Carolina with a global manufacturer going through a massive transition due to an acquisition. Both of these positions have been pushed to the top of the list by the global CEO so they'll be highly visible and have a ton of opportunity for impact. Both are individual contributors - first position is centered around lean in a DC - second role is logistics engineering. If you'd like to learn more - shoot me a note. If someone in your network might benefit from seeing this - please like or share. #hiring #logistics #manufacturing #lean #engineering

  • What you think about that? #friday #hr #shrm

I had an introductory phone call with an HR candidate recently and it didn't take long for her to recognize who I was talking about. It's a small community. But she also worked there. For 1 week. (She didn't tell me this my clients Director of HR did which was my next call after this one.) But I didn't know that because it's not on her LinkedIn profile. It's one of the many reasons I call LinkedIn dumb software - you can put anything on it - or leave anything off it. It's why vetting is important. I obviously wouldn't have reached out to her had I known she'd worked there but in this case she definitely wasn't interested. One of the things that makes me good at what I do is I like to ask questions. So when I found out she'd worked there - it turned from a conversation about pitching her the opportunity to a conversation about market information about my client. Sometimes I don't like a client either but they don't tell me all the nasty stuff sometimes. Sometimes you hear it from people who know it and I'm open to that feedback. Honestly it helps me find them the best person for their situation. If I know your place is a trainwreck or the CXO wants to talk to you every night at 9pm EST I can find you a person that's ok with that. But this candidate had a lot of negative things to say about my client and this is how our conversation went after we'd discovered she'd worked there: Her: I wouldn't be interested in going back there. Me: Why not? Her: A lot of drugs at their facility? Me: What do you mean? Her: If I brought in 60 people to interview, 30 of them would fail the drug test Me: Why would you hold that against my client? You were bringing those people in right? Her: I'd like to end this conversation. It went on for a couple of more minutes but how do you hold that circumstance against a company - talk poorly about them - walk out in your first week - when the issue is part of your job responsibility? The bigger issue with this hire is she didn't know what she was walking into and so when she got there - she was surprised. Some people are looking for country club and some people are looking for a boxing ring - you better be accurate about which one your place is. Good luck with your hiring out there! #hiringandpromotion #manufacturing #humanresources #hr
