Today at #Ecomondo in Rimini, we held the first meeting of the MIDAS Italian Regional Advisory Group, hosted by Novamont and moderated by Prof. Andrea Monti Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna. ?? This gathering brought together 20 participants representing farmers associations, farmers, service providers, consultants, and researchers. We engaged in a lively discussion, gaining insightful perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing agriculture on marginal lands in Italy. Key themes included: The unique challenges of farming on marginal lands: participants shared their experiences and insights into the specific obstacles faced in these areas. The potential of bio-based value chains and industrial crops: we explored how these can provide solutions for farmers seeking to cultivate marginal lands sustainably. Synergies with regenerative agriculture: the group discussed how industrial crops and bio-based value chains can complement regenerative practices, promoting soil health and biodiversity. We are grateful for the diverse perspectives shared and the collaborative spirit of the meeting. The insights gathered will be instrumental in guiding the MIDAS project as we continue to develop and demonstrate sustainable bio-based value chains for marginal lands across Europe. As part of this study, we are organizing key stakeholder workshops to gather diverse perspectives from across the agri-food sector, ensuring the new policy options not only aim to decarbonize agriculture but also gain broad acceptance and legitimacy ???? ?? I thank the speakers who accepted the invitation and dedicated their time to tell their experiences, as pioneers in Italy, in this change. Special thanks to Prof. Antonio Berti and Prof. Francesco Morari (DAFNAE - Dip. di Agronomia, Animali, Alimenti, Risorse naturali e Ambiente - UniPD) to the farmers Anna Trettenero, Martina Dal Grande and Elia Negretto, I thank Lorenzo Furlan-Veneto Agricoltura and Francesco Meneghetti-Confagricoltura Veneto, who gave us a national overview of the standards and policies related to the topic. Thanks to the participants, from all over Italy, from various realities (training centres, governmental, agricultural producers) who actively participated in this event, with a great exchange of information, experiences and knowledge. Lo scorso mercoledì 16 ottobre, presso l'Università di Padova, come Farm of Francesco e European Carbon Farmers, e con il supporto di EIT Food, abbiamo tenuto una giornata dedicata all'agricoltura conservativa, alla transizione agricola e alla sostenibilità dei sistemi produttivi.? This week the MIDAS project gathered partners in Spain for a productive consortium meeting, marking the halfway point of our 4-year journey. ?? Our visit to the guayule plantation of Instituto Técnico Agronómico Provincial, S.A.U. provided a firsthand look at the project's impact. Despite challenging conditions, the flourishing guayule demonstrated the potential of this industrial crop for marginal lands, inspiring local farmers who joined us on the site visit. We also toured the facility where Nokian Tyres plc is testing their products, including sustainable tires using guayule rubber – a testament to the project's innovative spirit. This is just one example of the many bio-based products MIDAS is developing, including biostimulants, bioherbicides, biodegradable films, biochar, wood panels and more. ?Addressing the growing challenge of marginal lands ?? ? All of our demo sites across Europe are located on marginal lands—areas facing limitations like drought or poor soil that hinder traditional agriculture. These areas are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, and our mapping studies predict that their extension will grow in the coming decades, particularly in Southern Europe. Therefore adaptation strategies are necessary to preserve these agricultural areas for the benefit of rural communities. By cultivating climate-resilient industrial crops and implementing innovative farming systems like intercropping and agroforestry, MIDAS is creating a pathway to empower farmers in these challenging areas, while contributing valuable bio-based products to the European bioeconomy. We are superproud to announce that our partner GuaTecs SAS is the winner of the Cleantech Open France contest 2024 for green chemistry and new materials. GuaTecs SAS is a company specalized in latex production from #guayule plantations established in Southern France. In MIDAS they are teaming up with other partners, Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, Instituto Técnico Agronómico Provincial, S.A.U. and Nokian Tyres plc to build a complete value chain producing rubber, latex and essential oils from guayule grown on marginal land in Southern Europe.
